I'd like to say Royal Enfield is a "state of art" in terms of motorbike.
I knew Royal Enfield twenty years ago with my brother£§s 51 model which could not be restored because at that time importation was prohibited in my country, then it was very difficult to find its genuine parts. Last March, 3rd , I got shocked when I was reading "Cycle World Magazine" and I saw an ad that showed the Bullet model. I got very happy about it.The same bike, the same model, no changes in fifty years. It was exactly the way I hoped. Harley has changed, BMW has changed, Norton has changed, Triumph has changed. Royal Enfield has not because it is a lovely genuine British motorcycle. God save the Queen!
I£§d like you to send me the history of the Royal Enfield and I£§d also like to know how I can buy one in Brazil.

my most favorite bike was a triumph tiger love these bikes! what is freeway-top speed, special maintenance needs, reliabiliy thanks

Freeway speed is 70-75 mph wide open. A much better speed is 55-60mph. The
bikes have survived this long because of their reliability. they do require
some "tinkering" such as adjusting valves, adjusting the cahin etc.

Topic: California
Message:
In California, we defy the laws of physics, and manage to make small engines extract more polutants from a gallon of gas than it contains. (Official Goverment Position.) Because of this, we are denied the pleasures of
owning many small engines. Is there any chance that modern technology, (Bribery, etc.) may make it possible to sell the Enfield here in the forseeable future?

Although bribery has become a popular sport most governmant official have no
sense of humor in this regard. The Royal Enfield factory is in control of
whether or not they will approach the California market. The most effective
thing you could do is to e-mail them. Their site is www.royalenfield.com

Message:
At 39 years of age, I'd been contemplating re-entering the motorcycle world, but I could not make up my mind on what type (dirt, dual-purpose, street). Then Easter Sunday I mentioned this ongoing dilema to my brother and he brought out his Cycle World 2002 buyer's guide and pointed out the Royal Enfields and said Here is what you need". I had never heard of this make and I was immediately attracted to its style. He went on to tell me what he knew about them. He then flipped to the color advert. British racing green, tan solo seat and "pedestrian splitter". I was sold! After a few nights of literally dreaming of that beauty, I drove down to the BMW of Fort Worth dealership and checked them out. They had a black classic 350, a black classic 500, a white deluxe (I think) 500, and a custom trials. I had to have my initial vision however, and after an hour or so of soul searching, I put down a deposit on a British racing green (with tan solo seat) 500 classic ES. I will !
be calling tomorrow and checking to see if this order was completed. He said it would take about seven days for it to arrive once ordered and if available. They then will prep it, put about thirty miles on it, tweak it and then it will be mine. I am then to bring it back at 500 miles and they will go over it again and tweak it further. I've read all the message board archives and am prepared and looking forward to the maintenance end of ownership. I will not be making any modifications (except the seat) for quite some time and I am anxious to get intimately aquainted with this "stock" machine. Even at this moderate price, this is a major purchase for me and I am more than a little aprehensive about incurring this debt, but somehow I feel the joy this bike is sure to provide will outweigh my "debt doubts". If anyone has any comments or suggestions for a soon-to-be Royal Enfield owner, please do at PerforminGorman@webtv.net

Topic: Bullet + 4 months
Message:
Well, it's now been nearly 4 months since the "new arrival", Bullet 500 ES. Just about getting run-in now and things are all "sweetening" nicely. I'm in the UK and using the machine almost exclusively for leisure purposes and boy, am I having fun. I just love this machine. I wish to upgrade a couple of things, like a less restrictive exhaust which makes the right noises, Re-jet carb accordingly and possibly a Boyer ignition for steadier tick-over and pick-up. But I should wait till we're out of warranty I guess. I have been asked by the Royal Enfield Owners Club to set up a Surrey (UK) division, so anyone from these parts should contact me through roym@meincken.freeserve.co.uk
Enjoy your Enfield. Ride Safe.
Greetings from England.

Topic: Wisconsin's got a new Enfield shop
Message:
You guys have some first-rate folks out here selling your bikes. Today I went to a new dealership that just got going with Enfields, S-K Service in Hatley, Wis, just E of Wausau on hwy 29.... yes this sounds like a plug I'm sure but I was impressed with the way these guys introduced me to these bikes, great time talking etc about Brit bikes, Enfield history, he used to be a dealer for the original Enfield back in the 60s. Lively shop w/ a couple Enfields (new&used) and MANY other bikes to choose from (first time I've ever seen a brand-new Triumph!). Anybody from north/east/central Wisconsin reading this oughta give these guys a try! In a few months I'll be another of their Enfield customers.... just a little while longer, just another thousand bucks, I'll be there, at last......I'll have my 350.

Most dealers will let you test ride a demo bike. these bikes are ridden all
over the world and are very reliable

Topic: Interested in reliability
Message:
I've talked to a few fellows around here about different motorcycles (I'm interested in buying my first bike) and two or three said if you like to fix things get a Royal Enfield. I remember these bikes in the early and late sixties and they were good scooters. I am not interested in shelling out the cost of a new pickup to buy a Harley. I am interested in reliability because of time constraints on my part. Let me know, if I have been misinformed or not. At present I am interested in the Enfield 500 classic. I would be touring approximately 1200 to 2000 miles per year one way. The rest of the time it would be a commute bike to work and back.

The Royal Enfield is a great bike for your described use!! The bikes are very
reliable, but like all things using 1955 technology, they do require
maintenance and adjusting. They are simpler than your home lawn mower and can
be worked on by the average person. If tinkering is "fun" to you the Enfield
is a perfect choice.

Topic: Knee Pad Removal
Message:
I like the chrome Deluxe models, but not the rubber knee pads. How hard are they to remove? Are they glued on? Is the tank chomed underneth? I've seen pics off another site where someone replaced the entire fuel tank with the Alloy Tank. But that seems quite extreme to just get rid of a couple of bits of rubber.

The knee pads on the Deluxe and Military models are firmly screwed onto the
petrol tank. It is a different tank from the one on the Classic models
because of this feature. When you remove the rubber pads you are left with a
nut like object which is welded on the tank. You can do what you are
suggesting if you are willing to fill in over the attainment points and
repaint that area. The entire tank is chromed first and then masked off and
painted. A problem is that the chrome is roughened up underneath the paint so
that it will adhere properly.

I'm 6"1" and live in the woods. Is an RE 500 Classic too small for me and how is it on rough roads and high altitude (7500'). I'm told the 350 would lack power at altitude. Also, is the Cozy hack hard for a user to put on and take off?

I am 6' and "full-figured" and find that the 500cc is more than adequate for
me. It excels on rough roads (remember this was the first motorcycle designed
with a swing arm frame). At 7,500 feet a simple main jet change should put
the engines air/fuel mixture right where it belongs. The Cozy sidecar is
fairly easy to take on and off. I estimate that it can be done in about 30
minutes (after you've done it once before, since the first time is always
longer.

Topic: 350 or 500???
Message:
Seeing that the horsepower difference between the 350 and 500 is so small, would I be better off with the 350 for around town driving? I'm not a long distance rider so I'm leaning towards the 350. Right now all I have to ride is a 100cc Kaw and the 350 seems to be the best choice. I love the vintage look and the bikes look first rate. All I have to do now is convince my wife that she wants an Enfield.......

As far as the bikies themselves go they are almost identical. The frame,
transmission, wheels are the same fro the 350 to the 500, the engine is
different as you noted. They both are great for around town, but the 500 is
better for highway use.

Topic: Dragging Clutch Fixed but damaged.
Message:
Follow on to message posted in february regarding a dragging clutch.
A quick strip and inspection found that the inner metal plate had been installed back to front
and the covex inner part of the plate was rubbing on the rear of the sprocket.
This had been that way since new the previous owner having tried to repair the
problem with a couple of new clutch plates had missed the incorectly installed metal plate
The problem was fixed simply by re-installing them metal plate correctly.
Unfortunatley the rivited fiber friction pads on the sprocket have been worked loose
by the incorectly installed plate.
Does anyone know if these fiber plates are available as a part or does the whole
sprocket require replacing.
