Topic: nubee2
Message: Well, I have had my 2002 500 ES Classic for over a month
now and so far so good.
With ~850 miles on it, the break in process is well under way. As others
have written the gear box responds best to deliberate operation and shifting
does improves with use. I am a experienced shade tree mechanic and have
found the Bullet to be fun to work on. I did the 500 miles service myself.
The valve lash adjustment is very straight forward. To help with the gear
box lube change I used a little air pressure to push out as much of the
old grease as possible. I bit the bullet (pun) and bought the trans lube
from the importers, it seems a little pricey but it goes in easy and there
seemed to be an immediate improvement in shift quality. The bike was running
very lean as purchased and rejetting was required. I ordered an assortment
of main and pilot jets, but then found a 127.5 main in my parts pile and
put that in and the improvement was dramatic. I think I have the jetting
either just right or still slightly lean (with needle at highest/richest
setting), I will put in a la!
rger pilot jet next and see what that does. I live right at sea level.
I have been riding motorcycles for over twenty years and I find the Bullet
very relaxing to ride. The electric start works very well. I like the
bike pretty much the way it came, but I plan on a solo seat and electronic
ignition as upgrades, and maybe the factory special tool kit for down
the road some. I purchased the oil pump up grade but I yet to install
it. My main goal for any upgrades will be for reliability/longevity rather
than higher performance. My experience with ordering items from Classic
Motorworks has been most satisfactory. So far I have gotten the 10K mile
maintenance kit, trans grease, shop manual, and some carb jets. All was
satisfactory and was delivered in a reasonable amount of time. Now remember
when purchasing a Bullet you are essentially buying a 1950’s
bike with some improvements and not a maintenance free appliance, tweaking
should be expected as part of the fun, and part o!
f making the bike your own.
whoa. that was a long one
