used Spectro 10W40 in numerous bikes and have not lost an engine yet.
After breakin the Bullet feels smooth and strong with synthetic oil...great

Topic: Enfield ownership
Message: I have owned a 5oo Enfield new since 1992 along with
several other bikes including a trike. It has not all been a bed of roses.
The gearbox was replaced in the first 2 months, I have rebuilt the engine
fully twice and replaced/upgraded parts on a regular basis. It went through
a chopper phase following a front ender when I had to replace the front
forks and now is in Cafe Racer guise. Despite the ups and downs I will
not sell it even though I have other "better", more reliable
bikes still.

Topic: Big end bearing
Message: I have just wrecked my engine due to neglecting the
oil feed plug rubber. Last week I found most of my floating bush big end
bearing in my oil filter!!!
Is fitting the roller bearing big end a wise choice? I need reliabilty!!!
iain@ictphotos.com
The stock big end bearing will
last indefinitely as long as the engine is properly maintained, and not
driven harder then normal. For example extended driving at wide open throttle
over a period of time will take its toll as will operating the engine
without sufficient oil. While the oil seal you mention should be looked
at occasionally, they normally last a very long time. the older bikes
use a cork seal which is more prone to failure and need routine replacement.

Message: Anything considered, from one needing lots of work to
a fully restored one. I do have a restored UK tank (very rare!), if anyone
wants to do a swap/trade. Or does anyone know of a similar tank from another

Topic: drain plugs
Message: It's great that the rearmost drainplug is the correct
one to drain the oil, that still doesn't tell anyone what the forward
drainplug is for. Is it wrong to remove it? Does it require a separate
fill point it you do?
The forward drain plug is for
the crankcase. Normally there should not be more than a teaspoon or so
of oil in the crankcase. If you drain it, you DO NOT refill it as that
will occur when the engine starts

Topic: transmission oil
Message: does anyone know when the veedohl 00 grease was introduced
as the transmission lubricant? what was used prior and was the switch
made solely in the interest of oil tightness or is this a superior lubricant?
This is a very good question.
I do not know when the switch was made. I wouldn't call it a "Superior"
lubricant, but a practical one. While the modern day gearboxes do not
leak, the older ones sure did, and the Veedohl does stay where it belongs.

Topic:
Message: I just took delivery of my new bullet one week ago and
thought that I might share my opinions/experience so far. I've put about
250 miles on the bike and all is going great. First. Much against the
advice of friends, family, and several dealers, I opted to go for the
kick-start only. To me, kicking my bike was part of the aesthetic that
I am going for in owning a classic bike. And to my eye, that starter just
ruins the looks of the left side of the bike. Now after a week I can say
that I not only have no regrets, but that I can't even imagine why anyone
would even bother with electric start on a bike that starts so easily.
After a day or two of getting to know the bike--when to choke, how much
throttle, etc. -- It starts for me on the first kick EVERY TIME. Even
when I've bragged about it in front of a group of people! Second, my bike
was converted to RH shift right off. It took a wee bit of getting used
to, but one should really spend a couple of days ge!
tting used to a bike before they take it out into traffic anyhow. That
aside, and having ridden Bullets equiped both ways, I have to say that
it is a darn shame that the feds require a LH shift (and all that linkage...),
as this bike shifts slick. And it gets better every day. Third. I try
to always get neutral before I come to a stop that I'm going to be at
for a while, so as not to drag the clutch. That being said, I knew that
there would be situations where I'd get stuck in traffic stopped in first
gear (for those without a bullet, these bikes are not supposed to be able
to be shifted into neutral while stopped and running). So I did an experiment
in my drive at home. I pulled up to a stop with the bike in first and
killed the engine. Then, with the clutch still in I rolled the bike forward
while applying gentle presure to the shifter in the direction of neutral
(down on a RH shift bike) My goal here was to get a "feel" for
neutral. Once I was convinved that I ha!
d it, I tried the same thing with the engine running and found that by
rolling the bike forward only a few inches, and quite slowly I might add,
I could get neutral with less effort on the shifter than is required to
make the jump from first to second. I wouldn't recomend learning this
in traffic, but I wouldn't go out into traffic without knowing this technique!
Well that's all for now. I'm afraid that if I write anymore they won't
post the message. I LOVE this motorcycle. -- Andy
