Topic: High Compression Piston Upgrade
Message: Howdy folks, this is my first post... I have a 2002
Bullet and I recently bought a goldstar exhaust, 30mm Amul Carb, a high
compression piston and matching cylinder, HiPo valve springs, and Hot
Cams... I have never done anything like this before and was wondering
if anybody had experience with any of these upgrades? If you could give
me some advice it would be much appreciated, I have the Service Manual
and the CD, but if somebody knows of a better resource that would be great
too... Thanks, sc

Topic: Just about everywhere...
Message: Just returned from Baghdad, Iraq (was a combat casualty).
While there, noted lots of Iraqis riding bikes. Some of my squad are avid
riders and marvelled or wondered at the variety of bikes swarming around
on the streets.Of course they all stopped when they saw a Royal Enfield
(I think a deluxe) roll on by with two passengers (no sidecar). I thought
they were amazed at the skill of the riders but come to find out that
they loved the style of the bike. All were startled when I told them they
could buy one in the states; that yes, it's an old design but pretty
reliable with care. As time passed, seemed to find more and more of them;
possibly a testiment of reliabilty? When my squad gets back, Royal Enfield
may have to supply a squad (once we figure on trim and model)..... TRAK9F@aol.com

before, but they were all cheaper bikes that were only a couple of hundred
dollars. I was wondering about the Enfields. I am a young guy, but I am

machines. I also like the prices! Any advice would be a great help. The
pros and cons of owning an Enfield. Thank you.

Topic: New Bullet owner! Shipping suggestions?
Message: Hi gang! I guess I am a new member of this great club,
as I have just bought a really tricked out 2003 Bullet Deluxe... only
a couple of months old and 1,400 miles on the clock.
My only problem is that it is in Pennsylvania and I'm in Alabama. I've
never shipped a bike before; does anyone have a carrier recommendation?
I thought I was going with the guys at Eagle One Express... they really
seem to know what they are doing and the price is right - but they can't
get my bike to me until late October!!! I'm itching to ride long before
then. Suggesions appreciated!

Topic: Today I am a Buleteer!
Message: The dealer told me it was ready, and I had a short day
at work today, so it was time to pick up the Bullet. After lunch, I dragooned
my wife to accompany me for an hour and a half ride in the car. The nearest
dealer to St. Louis is Interstate Motors near Rolla, about 100 miles (160
kilometers) from our home. It was a quick hour and a half on the interstate,
and after seeing the bike and posing for photos, she took the car back
home. I spent a little more time at the dealers signing papers and getting
some familiarization with the bike and break-in procedures. Remember that
hour and a half on the interstate? Not on a new Enfield! I headed out
to take the scenic route home. Here in the American midwest the farm-to-market
roads are paved and lightly traveled. Also lightly patrolled outside the
towns, but I wasn't going to be travelling at my customary speeds on
a new Bullet. I just tootled along, enjoying the bike and the scenery.
We're just approaching h!
arvest time here. Hay is rolled up in the fields and the corn (maize)
has reached it's full growth and is ripening -- the green fields are
starting to turn gold for the harvest. After about 30 miles, I noticed
that the bike was not shifting very well. Figuring that the clutch was
bedding in and the cable may have stretched I took up some of the slack
in the cable. Shifts between 3rd and 4th were just fine, I was getting
the hang of the neutral finder, but first to second and second to third
were still dubious. Sometimes everything shifted just fine, other times
the middle gears were just out of reach. Still, things went well and I
made it to the state highway with about thirty-five miles on the clock.
The speed limit was fifty-five, everyone does about sixty to sixty-five,
and I was keeping to forty-five and getting passed quite a bit. At one
point I was leading a parade of about six vehicles, so I pulled to the
shoulder of the road and let everyone by -- no point s!
lowing everyone else just because I was in no hurry! There was a patch
of rain, but just a mild drizzle. Since Enfields go through monsoons,
I didn't think it would be a problem, and it wasn't. Soon enough, the
rain was over and all that was left was some much needed coolness. After
about seventy miles, I was briefly touching fifty miles per hour. The
bike seemed to like that speed -- some of the buzziness smoothed out,
and the motor felt strong. About then, I stopped at a fast food place
for a rehydration (diet coke) break, called my wife to let her know that
I was doing fine, and adjusted the clutch cable again. As I was getting
ready to leave, a man in a pickup truck with a Harley Davidson decal pulled
up. It was worth the price of admission to see the look on his face as
the Bullet fired up on the first kick! Plus a little fancy maneuvering
leaving the parking lot for good measure. OK, I kept in in first gear,
not risking a missed shift with an audience, but !
it felt good!
Back on the road, I stayed on state highways until about the one hundred
mile mark. That was when I hopped on another county farm-to-market --
only this one was familiar. It's one of the roads my riding buddies and
I use on our breakfast rides. Now that the century mark had passed I was
beginning to ride with a little spirit. There's nothing like twisty asphalt
to put a big grin on a rider's face! It was mostly third and fourth gear
sweepers (given the way the bike was shifting, it was all third and fourth
gear), and I was beginning to feel that the Enfield was in it's element.
All too soon the suburbs arrived. That was OK -- the Bullet was feeling
familiar, and the rush hour was over. Besides, this was familiar territory
-- I knew which roads were fun in the 'burbs and which to avoid.
I arrived home after dark, about four hours after my wife. Still, I had
a fun ride, and began the break-in process right! Later, I adjusted the
clutch cable in the housing. I'm eager to see if the shifting has improved
on my next ride.
I took some photos, which I will upload after they're developed.
All I can say is, this is one fun bike! It may be -- no, it IS -- idiosyncratic
and anachronistic, but it captures the feelings that first attracted me
to motorcycling. It's simple, responsive, and I can even do the basic
adjustment and maintenance myself!
