Topic: 1958 Royal Enfield 700cc
Message: The first motorcycle I owned was the 1958 "Indian"
700cc. It had a netural finder on the back of the shifter. I always wondered
why other companies never used this because I found it most useful at
red lights.

Topic: Just bought an Enfield
Message: I learned last week that a local dealer was picking
up the Royal Enfield line. (Austin Cycle Sports, Austin, TX)I went out
today and saw the first one they had received, a Military 500 ES model.
I rode to the dealership on a Ural and rode home on a new Bullet. The
distance from the dealership to my home was about 30 miles and the bike
had 27 miles on the clock when I bought it. I'm now past the 50 mile initial
break-in. The bike runs great, has plenty of power, and starts with no
problems. I had read on here that the shifter would be stiff and was pleasantly
surprised to find it was not nearly as bad as I had been led to expect.
True, it does take a little more effort than some other bikes but nothing
that I didn't get used to in a few miles. I never missed a shift or found
false neutral. I found the neutral finder lever handy and easy to use.
The brakes, which I had also read were not the best, are much more effective
than those on the Ural. In fact, the!
only problem I encountered was getting the bike away from the guys at
the dealership! They kept wanting to polish this and that a bit more or
tinker with something just a little. It was really funny because there
was nothing wrong with the bike. :-) Then there was the picture taking
as I fired the bike up to leave. I did finally manage to escape and make
my way home. All I can say is that this is a great bunch of guys. I look
forward to a long relationship with them and many miles of smiles on my
RE.
Anyone in the Austin area interested in a RE should contact the dealership.
I took the only one they had but five more are due in on Tuesday, Dec.
9th. Also, anyone in the Austin area who rides a classic bike please contact
me.

Topic: Bullet 65
Message: I noticed on the royal enfield site for India that they
have the Bullet 65 for Europe. I was wondering if it would be imported
to the US also? I like the idea of a 5 speed with the 60's look.

Topic: Riding Weather...
Message: Winter in Central Texas...high today was in the lower
70's with clear skies. I had to make a run out to Austin Sports Cycles
to drop off the owners handbook and repair manual for my former bike,
a Ural I traded in on the Bullet. A new Norther brought gusty wind conditions
that made me look forward to getting the windshield on my Bullet. I had
not ridden a motorcycle without a windshield in years and getting pelted
in the face by flying bits of sand, etc, reminded me why I like one. There
are much better ways to get your teeth white than sandblasting. It was
a sixty mile round trip through the Texas Hill Country and the Bullet
ran like a champ. With 187 miles on the odo, I'm still only pushing speeds
up to 45 mph but who cares? On a warm day with a great bike, who needs
to go fast?
When I arrived at ASC, they were uncrating five new RE's and everyone
was acting like it was Christmas already. This was especially true for
one of the mechanics who had laid claim to a just received Military. You
see, the bike I bought was the first bike the dealership had received,
a Military, and he had intended it for himself until I bought it almost
literally out from under him. He seemed determined to not have it happen
again.
That leaves four new bikes, all 500's and all electric start. I overheard
that a customer was coming in to take a look so there may be only three
by now. Anyone in the Central Texas area who wants, or think they might
want (and you will), a Bullet should give them a call before they are
all gone. And by the way, I'm not paid by anyone to promote RE. I just
know a great bike at a great price when I see one.
Thanks,
John

Message: I just purchased a 1964 bullet.I don't know anything
about bikes.I don't even know if it's a kick or electric. Are there any
pics or info on this in your web site/
I think the owner told me it only had 3400 miles (origonal).I am certianly
excited. It's a 5 gear and he said something about squeezing a lever on
the left side to help with compression. Can you tell me about the bike.I
paid 2,500 dollars for it.It's all origional and doesn't leak any oil.

If a 1964 doesn't leak oil I'd
be surprised if there were any in it.

Topic: Available performance?
Message: I'm curious about how much various modifications help
performance on the 500. A roadtest of a 1958 Enfield Bullet 500 shows
a top speed of 88 mph, with a ability to cruise at 70-75 indefinitely.
The biggest difference between that bike and the current offering seems
to be a freer flowing exhaust on the original, a slightly higher compression
ratio (6.5:1), and perhaps a less restrictive air cleaner.
Even if only riding in the 55-60 mph range, it seems preferable to have
25-30 mph reserve speed available, rather than 10-15 mph. It seems that
freer flowing exhaust and air filter could give substantial benefits by
allowing the engine to work easier at any speed. What was the actual top
speed of your own 500 before you changed anything? How much did you gain
by changing exhaust system, carb, etc?

Topic: 500 miles...
Message: I just hit 500 miles on my 2004 Bullet Military. Other
than a couple of nuts that became loose, all is well and the bike still
runs great. No oil leaks at all! The shifter continues to improve and
is now quite easy to operate. One note of interest is that the first two
tanks of gas I used were premium and I was somewhat disappointed to find
that I only got about 50 mpg. I switched to regular and the gas milage
increased to about 70 mpg. This engine likes lower octane and that is
all to the good.
