Message: Hello there! I am considering purchasing one of these
beauties and would love to hear from other owners re: thier satisfaction
w performance, quality, reliability. I currently own 1000cc 1985 Sportster,
looking for a change. Does Enfield shift like a Triump? I had an old hardtail
trumpet in the 70's. Any and all input appreciated!! Thanks! Colleen

If so- where do I start.

The Royal Enfield is only sold
as a complete bike. We do sell kits to convert a stock Royal Enfield into
a cafe' or Scrambler/Trials bike. In those cases you start with a stock
bike

Message: What function do the various drain plugs serve that
are on the underside of the crankcase? More specifically, which ones do
I need to be concerned with in order to drain the engine and gearbox oils?
The gearbox oil drain is on the
bottom of the gearbox itself. As for the oil tank, the most rearward plug
on the crankcase is the correct to drain the oil.

Topic: RE 500. 7,000 miles and counting
Message: I've a 2000 model yr Bullet 500, as for reliability
I've had no problems just do the required maintenance and what I can't
handle the dealer has and has done excellent service. Biggest problems
I experienced are a flat tire (rear) and a blown fuse (the bike only has
one) due to minor corrosion on the wire end and connector which I cut
back and replaced. Shifting can be quirky if you don't keep the linkages
clean and the correct RPM range, but over all I'm very satisfied.

Topic: oil filter
Message: Can I make my own oil filter with a hunk of felt inside
that swiss chees cylinder? I've been reading about the high tech modern
fibres, but what's on the enfield? When I did a change today I really
resented the waste and the expense. (Yeah, I'm poor, and every penny saved
is going towards my dream of a sidecar.)
nathanhey@cybermesa.com
I cannot vouch for the amount
of flow through a felt filter. Up to a point you can clean and reuse and
Enfield filter, althgou it may be false economy.

Topic: dragging clutch
Message: what could cause dragging clutch
The most common reasons for a dragging clutch are as
follows:
1. Improper adjustment
2. Overheating (use neutral instead of the clutch when stuck in traffic)
3. Improper lubricant in the primary case

quebec@pivot.com
the Royal Enfield will indeed
be capable of cruising at 55mph and taking the length of trips you mentioned
reliably and comfortably. a 500cc bike will go 70-75 mph at wide open
throttle, however it is not happy at that speed for any length of time.
55-60 is the "sweet spot" for the bike. the Enfield is not meant
to be a "freeway" bike, but rather a secondary road bike. Because
it uses old technology (points ignition, solid valve lifter, etc.) it
does require routine maintenance. It also requires a break-in period.
Routine valve adjustment, etc., should be done every 2,000 miles or so
once the bike is broken in. We do not recommend using it a highway speeds
until you have met the break-in period. Parts are plentiful as we have
a warehouse in Minnesota filled to the ceiling with parts at a very reasonable
price. The price of ownership of the Enfield including the initial purchase
is low. In short, if you want to use the bike to cruise at 55-60mph and
are willing to maintain it properly the bike is for you. If you are looking
for a Honda that looks old and does not require any maintenance this is
the wrong bike. If you are looking for a bike with lots of personality,
outright fun and a differnt look from everything else on the road the
Royal Enfield is a sure winner.

Thanks
c. Lombardi, Jersey City, N.J.
scottgiry@aol.com
All new bikes sold in the USA are required to shift
on the left. The Royal Enfield shifts on the left and brakes on the right.
If you prefer it the other way around we offer a kit to move the shift
to the right hand side.

I just bought a 1996 Royal Enfield. After the first ride the clutch lever
does not come back to its open position after being released. It comes

do I fix it.
Regards
Given the year of your bike I
am guessing that it has been sitting for a while. the first thing to do
is to lubricate the cable, and then adjust it properly, this should clear
up your problem

Topic: Odometer Replace & Adjust
Message: Hi,
I'm a new Enfield rider. I just bought a '99 Bullet 500 at the end of
last August, and I want to swap out my original odometer for this really
cool used custom one that I found at a motorcycle salvage shop in my area.
However, the one I found has about 25k miles on it whereas my bike only
has 7600 miles on it. Is there any way to adjust the miles on my new odometer?
Thanks for your time and help. Happy trails! -Mike Banks

Topic: road trips
Message: Hello there...This is my first time so I'm going to
apologize up front if I'm bringing up a topic already discused. I'm considering
buying a Bullet 500 but I'm worried about the top speed of the bike being
only 75 mph. If I decided to buy the bike what would I need to improve
the performance of the bike and would it cost alot? I'm asking because
I would like to, at times take long road trips. It seems that running
the bike at 60 to 70 mph at long distances would be harmful. any feedback
would be great. Thanks--Cory
c.t.hixson@erols.com
While the top speed of the 500cc
is indeed 70-75mph, you are correct in your assumption that it would not
be happy in that speed range for long trips. The Enfields likes to cruise
at 55-60mph. It is not intended for expended freeway use, but rather for
secondary roads where you can enjoy both the bike and the scenery.
