Topic: break in procedures
Message:
i cheated a bit on my break in. i kept it under 50 for the first 450 miles. then ran it hard from then on felt guilty but i couldn't help meself). after 2300 miles i can detect no ill effects. valves and rings seal well enough when warm that i can stand on the kick start lever. however you choose to break it in you do so at your own risk if you dont follow the instructions. is your need for speed worse than your fear of guilt?
email: w.k.bridgeman@worldnet.att.net

Of course we highly reccomend that you follow the breakin instructions. The purpose is to allow all of the various moving parts to "mate" with each other. When they are new they create extra friction and heat while they are breaking in. If there is one thing that is most important it is to vary your speeds and not drive at one speed for long. When you back off of the throttle, extra oil gets thrown to the underside of the piston lubricating the piston and piston pin. As for "driving it hard" let me repeat what we tell our customers. A stock Enfield will go 70-75mph wide open.as you know, no machine can be run at wide open throttle for too long. The Enfield is meant to cruise at 55-60mph and is not a good freeway bike.

Topic: Enjoying my Bullet
Message:
Have been riding since the early 60's. Started on Brittish machines, and quit road riding on BMW in 1989. Wanted to get back on a classic "thumper", but didn't want the expense and hassle of a restoration. Bought a new 500 kickstart
and I've found the perfect retro bike for me. Some impressions:
1. These are genuine motorcycles from the mid-50's. They are not just made to look old. They were designed before freeways, and thus are best enjoyed on the 2 lanes at 60 - 65 mph max.
2. They start out rough as cobs, but with a gentle break-in (an absolute requirement)start rewarding the rider around 800 miles with one kick starts, stronger acceleration, smooth clutch, and crisp, positive shifts.
3. Carry a bottle of Loctite Blue, and check all critical nuts after each ride for the first 1,000 miles. And enjoy motorcycling the way it was before the advent of the crotch rocket.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Topic: Bullets in California
Message:
I live in California and am interested in buying a Bullet 500 Classic. However, they are not C.A.R.B. certified. I know newer Enfields are in California, and would like to hear how others got their Enfields registered here.

Topic: Enfield vs Ural
Message:
Hi, I love the posts on this message board. I am seriously looking at buying a bike with a sidecar. I hav eit narowed down to a Ural or a Royal Enfield, (my local dealer, Bullseyes Bikes in Excelsior MN has a nice white one). I have not had either model up to 55 mph yet. The post s on thi smessage board have been very helpful about what to expect from the Enfields. Anybody out there with a 500cc Bullet and sidecar that share their experiences with me? I plan to use the bike around the Mpls-St Paul MN area with the occassional trip to west central Wiscon, (rolling hills, some with steep grades). These forays into Wisconsin will bea bout 400+ miles round trip for the bike, myself and passengers. I want to be able to bring along my two sons, (aged 4 and 10) and I know that there are issues with passeger footpeg location on the RH side with the sidecar attached. Everything about the bikre I like. I ahve been biking since I was 14 years old, have owned a few Triumphs, one Norton, one HD FLH full dress and currently a Ducati Paso. I'd liek to hear if anyone on this board has any experience, (either owning or knows of an owner of a Ural) with the Ural motorcyles. Your experiences about your Enfield and the Cozy Sidecar are appreciated. Thanks!

Topic: Gear Shift
Message
: The initial stiffness does go away & rapidly turns into sloppiness due to wear on the external linkages and the plastic bushes. I have ridden right side shift bikes in India and my own left side shift in Australia and they are both the same. Ok - maybe the conversion adds a little slop but if you are used to "modern bike" you will find that a right side shift is a dangerous pain in the arse (possibly even illegal ?).
Once I my bike was broken in, the biggest source of disappointment was the gear change. While I don't normally do produce endorsements, I eventually ended up buying the miracle clutch kit and the shift bushing from Enfield USA. All problems were solved and it is well worth the money (even if you are buying in Aussie dollars). It still doesn't shift like a Jap bike but it is a 100% improvement - more like an early BMW. I guess the improvement depends on how far out your original clutch is. The trick for young player's here is getting the alternator stator alignment correct again ...
While you've got the primary cover off you might as well fit the heaver clutch springs, the clutch rod thrust bearing and the quiet run primary change tensioner. All fairly cheap.
General notes on clutch & gear shifting. The linkage are exposed to road grime - make an effort to keep them clean. Change the primary drive oil regularly it does make a difference - I use auto trans fluid because it is cheap. Make sure the primary drive chain tension is correct. I have used a lot of different gear box oils to no real effect. I have had the hard facing on the end of the clutch rod chip off which has caused the rod's end to distort and require frequent adjustment - rod was replaced. Pull this rod out and grease regularly especially if you hear a squeaking with the clutch pulled in (watch for the ball bearing !). I have had the clutch cable snap where the cable nubbin fits into the lever. Replaced this with a higher quality cable but I now put a drop of oil here when lubing the cables - do the brake cable as well. Cable lube tool is also well worth the money.

Topic: CA emissions to be US standard?
Message:
Found this article on the AMA website.
http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/releases/G01032.asp
It says that the EPA are adopting the California emission standards for new bike nationwide. i.e. no new Enfields in the US after 2006 or 2008 for "small manufacturers".
Is this still on the books now that Bush II is dismantling the EPA?
Is Enfield going to add emission control gubbins or are they going to drop the US market?
