Message: I just purchased a 500 ES. So far,it only has about
200 miles on it.I have carefully followed the break-in procedures....My
question is; is this something that has been handed down from the early
days, and must be strictly adhered to, or can a feller bend the rules
a little,or a little more? Any advice, experiences, etc. are welcome....Thanks,

Topic: New RE500ES
Message: Just bought a new RE500ES from Indian Motorcycles of
Boston, Everett, Mass. They have a great shop and great support.
Had a bit of problem with kickstarting bike early on when got it home
here on the Cape. I ordered the CDROM of the shop manual from RE USA and
found that following the kickstart instuctions in it the best. With clutch
lever engaged slowly cycle kick start pedal three times thru full throw.
Then let off clutch lever and back push kick start lever until feel resistance
from cylander. Stop there. Gently depress de-compression lever only a
small amount and depress kick start pedal until you hear a slight wheez
from ehaust valve. Disregard the Ammeter needle as your ammeter may not
give a real reading. Go by the (by ear) sound of the cylinder wheeze.
Ingintion ON, kill swith ON, give a steady, long, full kick and she will
roll over nicely. A bit of throttle might be necasseary. Usually no choke
necessary.rjbowen@capecodinternet.com

Message: ...Howdy,folks; I just purchased a 500 ES and have only
about 300 miles on it. My question is; should the break-in procedure be
strictly adhered to, or is there a little, or a little more,\"room

etc. Actual facts will also be allowed!! Thanks a lot. Bill.

Does anyone have, or know of, a used 350 classic or delux? I am a fairly
small woman with no mechanical experience on bikes, so need one in fairly
good condition.

Yes. It is either the condenser or the coil. After checking that there
is current to the coil, I would replace the cheaper of the two and see
if it works. I suspect the condenser is definitely cheaper thatn the coil.

Topic: Austin Enfielders?
Message: Hi all,
Are there any Royal Enfield riders in Austin, Tx or nearby surrounds?
Also I'd like to ask a few of you some questions about your experiences
with the Enfield, whether the stiffness in shifting goes away (and when)
what the longest trips are that you've taken, if you feel confident to
take longer rides (>300-500 miles), or are you hesitant for fear of
getting stuck way out in the boonies?
It seems that if you take some basic spare parts along the way, and some
fuses, you should be okay if the bike was broken in correctly.

Topic: Canadian Royal Enfields
Message: I have recently imported 2 Lightning 535 models from
India directly and find they apparently are not eligible for use in Canada,so
they sit inthe Customs warehouse whioel I try to sort things out with
Canadian DOT. As well there are no Canadian RE dealers.
Does anyone know what the emissions situation is with these bikes in USA
, ie is there a U.S. test emissions code that can be quoted to perhaps
use for Canadian Import-- we had lots of these bikes here in the 50's
and 60's -- but it seems new ones are not allowed -- any help would be
greatly appreciated-
please reply to e-mail address-am in southern Ontario area -thanks in
advance- Lee Barke
dflawls@yahoo.com
Unfortunately you are stuck with
two bikes that will end up in the "Crusher". There is no legal
way for an individual to import one of these directly from India
to either Canada or the US. Both countries have strict laws concerning
the importation of motor vehicles and insist that it is only done by the
legal importer as he/she is the one the government holds resonsible for
meeting the legal importation standards. We get calls a couple of times
each month from people just like yourself that have bikes confiscated
by Customs. Please spare yourself the grief and expense and check te laws
of your country before trying to individually import one. Once it is here
there is nothing we can do to help.

Topic: (see above)
Message: Pasted [above] is a message that recently showed up
on the message board. There might be an exception to the rule of
no individual importation to the U.S., possibly two exceptions.
In the early 1980's I was in the U.S. Army and assigned to work with the
U.S. Customs Service. There was an exception to policy on importing
vehicles to the U.S.. Members of the U.S. Army were allowed a "once
in a lifetime" exemption from all requirements. No emission,
no DOT, no nothing. The service member just filled out some forms
and everything was waved. I regret that I don't remember which forms
nor how to aquire them. A good place to start looking might be with
Military Police assigned to work with Customs.
Another exception to policy is if the service member
was authorized to bring a privately owned vehicle (POV) from the U.S.
to an overseas tour of duty at government expense. If the original
vehicle is destroyed in an accident then the Service member is allowed
to purchase a replacement that the government will send back to the U.S.
with the soldier upon completion of the tour of duty. The replacement
vehicle is exempted from normal import requirements.
I hesitate to mention the second one because I would feel guilty if soldiers
started totalling their vehicles just to get the exemption.
I know these are both long shots with limited application but they might
help somebody

Topic: gear shift
Message: I have heard that the shifting stiffness disappears
with age. Can somebody verify that?
I’ve also been told that some of the initial stiffness is caused
by the conversion from a right side shift to a left side shift and that
restoring the bike to a right side shift will make the whole operation
run more smoothly. Has anybody tried it both ways? Was it better on the
right? Finally, I’m at Fort Lewis, WA and I’m very close to
deciding to buy a 500 but I’d like to test ride one that is fully
broken in and properly adjusted. Is there anybody nearby willing to let
me take their baby for a spin?
Thank you, SFC Zoo

Topic: Cozy Sidecar
Message: Recently purchased a Cozy Classic sidecar for my Royal
Enfield Classic 500ES. Has anyone tried fitting a brake to the sidecar
? I have read about attaching a second brake foot pedal just to operate
a sidecar brake.
So far have had no luck researching for brake kits on internet.
Kind regards to all,
