Topic: Any ideas?
Message: I bought one of those Bullets used in that MicroSoft promotion, it has only 33 miles on it but I've not been able to get it to run right.
It's flashing back through the carb, it will only start and run on choke and its fine once running until you take the choke off!
The flashback only occurs during starting it doesnt happen whilst running.
When I got the bike it had been left outside for over a year, so the carb was gummed up bad and still might be, I'm not sure, I'm gonna give it another more drastic dip bath clean.
At first I thought it was the timing too far advanced causing the flashback but again, it seems to be about right assuming the usual 1/8 before TDC is approximately right.

Any ideas?
email: b1kerm1ke@yahoo.com

The Microsoft bikes generally were not taken care of very well initially by thr promotions company, and as you point out sitting outside hasn't done it any good. Your big clue is that it will run with the choke on. This points to a "lean" fuel condition. The causes are as follows:
  1. Gunk in tank or petrol tap restricting flow. Check fuel flow from petrol tap. Also you may very well have rust in the tank if it has been sitting for a while. Before you do anything install an inline fuel filter. in the petrol hose
  2. Gunk in carburetor - take the carb apart, clean with carb cleaner of dunk into a can of carb cleaner. Blow our every little passage with compressed air, When you reassemble carburetor the correct float setting is 28 - 30 mm from the base of the carburetor to the top of the float when the carb is held inverted.
  3. Check the rubber manifold that is between the carburetor and the head. There is a 85% chance that it is cracked also causing a lean running condition. Look especially carefully under the two clamps

Message: Where could I find the serial number
on the bike?  And to know the year model!
email: Boutique100@Hotmail.com

On US market bikes the number can be found in several places.1. It is stamped into the neck of the fork2. It is stamped onto a plate that is affixed to the front frame downtube3. It is stamped on a plate that is located in the right hand tool box4. The engine number can be helpful also and it is stamped  on the engine case on the left hand side just below the cylinder barrel. When you find the code you can send it to us and we will let you know, or on our website at www.enfieldmotorcycles.com there is a page that tells how to find the year of the bike

Topic: exhaust leak
Message: I have an exhaust leak right were the pipe meets the head. No adjustment or tapping will stop it. I want to try a copper gasket and see if that does the trick. Any suggestions?
email: AGENTWILCOX@YAHOO.COM

As you have noticed, the fit between the head and the pipe is usually only perfect once. Once you remove the pipe or change it etc.the hole in the head may be ever so slightly oversized. Some people have used High temperature silicone with mixed results. I personally like to use a "muffler or tailpipe expander." It will expand the pipe and make it fit perfectly, it will also insure that the pipe is perfectly round. One note of caution, you must be very careful using this tool so that you don't expand the pipe too much. ( Been there done that)

Topic: fuel system
Message: Okay, I give up.  The small-diameter clear plastic tubing that runs from the bottom of the carburetor float bowl (I have a 2004 500 c.c., so I assume this is a Mikuni carb) has to go somewhere.  However, I noticed that it was just flopping around, but the other end had obviously been attached to something, as evinced by the flaring and discoloration at the end.  Where does this attach?
email: j.hanvik@att.net

There are two small hoses coming from the carburetor on the Enfield. One is an overflow in case the float sticks and the other one is a vent. Both attach to the carburetor and then should be routed down by the swing arm so that any overflow will be directed toward the underside of the bike. It is always a good idea to turn off the petrol tap when the bike ins not in use. It seems that if you turn it off religiously the carburetor float will never stick, but if you are careless Murphy's law will dictate it.

Topic: Sturgis '04
Message: Just returned home from the 64th Annual Sturgis Rally. I was amazed by two things: 1) How well my '02 Bullet 500ES operated through some exciting tours of the Black Hills, including the Needles Highway with all its switchbacks, and 2) How much attention bikers paid to my little Bullet. Harleys there were in great abundance, but anyone who laid eyes on the Royal Enfield simply HAD to ask about it.

Topic: sidecar inquiry
Message: Will the Bullet performance be OK with a sidecar mounted??  Will highway cruising be possible?
email: doitome13@yahoo.com

The Cozy sidecar is made specifically for the Royal Enfield. The bike does have enough power to pull the car and a passenger. As for highway speed you cannot expect any more than 60mph with the sidehack.

Topic: thinking about buying
Message: This is Tom, I test drove a the new S-65 model today. I thinking about trading in my 1991 Honda 1100 St. I know I won't be able get on the Interstate and cruise at 70 or 75 mph but how about 65mph?
email: murff60016@yahoo.com

Although many of our customers do this on a regular basis, I till recommend 55-60 as a cruise speed. That DOES NOT mean that going 65mph for period of time is out, it just means that you and the bike will be happier at 55-60

Topic: kick stand
Message: Do the new 65's have a kick stand ?
email: jtvon2@aol.com

None of the Royal Enfields have a sidestand (kickstand) as standard equipment. The bike is light enough that the Center Stand is no problem... However we have developed a new sidestand that is a great design. It easy to install, adjustable and looks and works well

Topic: ignition
Message: I have installed the electronic ignition and I believe I hear pinging. How do I adjust the ignition to remove this problem?
email: AGENTWILCOX@YAHOO.COM

You need to retard the timing to prevent the pinging. since the distributor moves in a clockwise rotation, to retard the timing ( make the spark plug fire later) move the backing plate which holds the electronic pickups clockwise or to the right. It doesn't take much to make a difference. For example one degree of change on the distributor is equal to two degrees of change at the crankshaft. Trial and error will produce a good result.

The "Bite the Bullet" Thong is defiantly an after-market accessory. It can be found at www.cafepress.com/enfieldbullet.
