Topic: Looking around
Message: Hiya! I've just got the bug to look around at bikes
and after one day of research on what all is out there as far as new motorbikes,
I quickly settled on the Royal Enfield. My Dad used to ride Triumphs &
Nortons and although I don't yet completely know how to ride a motorcycle,
it's in my blood so to speak. I was initially curious about diesel motorcycles
as I would like to eventually get into making biodiesel and learn about
diesel engines and it was through that research that I was pointed at
Royal Enfields.
Today I went to the local dealer across town (I live in Lexington, KY)
and while they weren't very attentive to me, an obvious browser, they
gave me a pamphlet and some casual banter, including "our mechanic
loves to work on them".
This boils down to my question: would a 350 Bullet be a good starter bike?
Consider that I would like to perform practically all of my own maintenance
and repair, as I currently do to my car and bicycle. Is the dealer's comment
indicative of a maintenance problem? What is behind the warrenty that's
mentioned in the pamphlet?
I really enjoy the idea of a bare-bones, minimalist classic.
email: aerialp@yahoo.com
The 350 is a fine bike, but it
should be noted that if you intend to modify the engine with "speed
parts" in the future there are many more available for the 500cc.
The warranty is for 12 months or 9,000 miles and covers most everyting
except wear items like tyres etc.

Topic: 500 mile check-up
Message: I had my 2004 Bullet Military in for its 500 mile service
and check-up last week. No problems found according to the dealer. The
shifter now works very well with shifts being crisp and positive. I've
logged in another 100+ miles and oil loss continues to decrease. Gas mileage
has settled in at around 70 mpg with regular gas. Still no complaints
and I'm still one happy Bulleteer!

Topic: Need for speed?
Message: Noted that the RE can max out 70-75 MPH but not recomended
for long periods; rather 55-60 MPH is rec cruising speeding. Any possiblities
that RE will upgrade their system to at least match the speed limit for
safety? I know that riding a freeway on such a bike is not ideal but may
be neccesary. Can't imagine drastic engineering revisions to make it happen
but could be wrong.
email: TRAK9F@aol.com
While 70-75mph is the speed limit
on the vast majority of freeways you are correct it is not recommended
for long periods of time. Personlly I think htat driving a Bullet at 55-60
on a freeway is not a good idea since others are traveling faster. The
bike can be made to go faster by the owner with a few modifications. But.....the
bike is what it is. It is not meant to travel the super-slab, but rather
on secondary roads where you can enjoy riding at a slower pace.

Topic: Tires
Message: I am ordering a classic 500ES in the spring. I have
already bought the repair manual CD to be ready for it. What is the largest
tire size the Bullet will take? I had a BSA 650 of similar weight and
wheelbase and ran 3.50 front, 4.00 rear. Will these size tires change
the gear ratio and top end?

Topic: Keeping up
Message: Have 6000 miles on my '99 500 Bullet. Went on a 650
mile weekend trip through the hills in S. Indiana last Sept. perfect ride
for the bullet. My 4 friends, 2003 Shadow, 86 Kow" 850 and 69 Bonnie
(these must have been very fast in "69), and '81 R10 BMW kind of
laughed at me, but they could no loose me in the hills and curves. The
torque is nice at low speeds. The shifter did hang up a few times with
all the shifting and the vibration loosened up a few bolts and broke the
turn signal brackets , all repaired at the overnight camp ground . If
you do not like to attract a crowd at every gas stop, lunch stop or camp
ground, do not tour on a Bullet. I think I sold 2 Bullets for DRS in 3
days. Will be going an another trip in 2004, 1200 miles but there will
be a lot of high speed 70mph roads so have aquired an R80/t BMW. A great
tourer but booooring compared to the Bullet.

Topic: Cool factor
Message: Well I bought a 2001 kick start model back in November;
it's white with a black solo seat. I've been enjoying it immensely. I've
done a fair amount of work on it but the only thing it really needed was
an oil change, clutch cable adjustment, and replacing of the rubber boot
that connects the carb to the cylinder intake.
Everywhere I go people stop to check out the bike. If it is parked I have
seen several people gather around it, talking about it. At stoplights
people point at it from cars that are next to me. Everyone at work who
rides asks about it. Yesterday, while I was walking back to my bike, I
saw a hiptster woman taking pictures of it. Then someone else walked past
while I was getting on it and said, "wow, that is a cool bike!".
Strangers taking pictures of my motorcycle, compliments galore, all kinds
of questions, now that is some fun stuff.
Nobody EVER asked questions about my Yamaha.
So get your Bullet NOW before EVERYONE has one. :)

Topic: Bullet 500 "ES"
Message: I'm enamoured with the bike shown on this site a a "Custom
Model" then "Electric Start". This shows a solo seat 500.
Is the bike shown anything more than a green Electric Start Bullet with
a different seat or is there more to it.
I've tried studying pictures of both side by side and see that maybe there
are different signal and tail lites.
Is the solo seat bike shown sold as shown? If it is a kit, is there a
single part number that gets you that look? Can you tell me how much the
kit retails for?
Thanks-
Future NJ owner.

The bike you refer to has a "Deluxe"
solo seat. A 7" Tri-Bar headlight, bullet turn signals, a Deluxe
front license plate and an alternate taillight. All of those items are
accessories and can be seen at www.enfieldmotorcycles.com in our on-line
store
