Topic: Reliability
Message: I may have a longer communite in the near future. Due to gas prices and highway congestion, I concidered buying a motorcycle. I just discovered the Enfield and wanted to know if they are reliable for hour long trips (highway speeds) a couple times a week. If there are any other suggestions or modifications I would let me know. Thanks Julian

Topic: reliability
Message: I live in Pa. I am planning another motorcycle trip out west, and was wodering if my 2002 Re500es military (with 3k miles)could make it with some slight modifications-tires/gears/electric ignition/etc. Those I will be riding with would expect that I ride on the hwy. I am mechanically inclined, service the bike, and have made the trip before. It is a LONG demanding ride. The last time I took a 1980 kz. The main question is this-Can the RE stand up to this type of riding in its present condition and/or with any minor modifications? Please tell me if this idea is out of the question. If so I will purchase another bike. If it is possible-please suggest the modifications and I will make them.

The bike is certainly capable of this type of long distance travel, but......... and its an important but, only if you plan on traveling mostly on secondary roads. The bike is not meant for lengthy freeway riding. The bike will go 70-75 mph (somewhat higher in the new Bullet '65) wide open, but is meant for 55-60 mph. A 4-speed 500cc Bullet will benefit from a larger countershaft sprocket (it comes with a 17 tooth, we like an 18 tooth for extended highway riding), the Bullet '65 already has an 18 tooth sprocket. so if it is a freeway trip get a Goldwing or a Buick, if it is for fun and relaxation and to see the country use the Bullet.

Topic: Changing Oil
Message: I'm about to change the oil on my 2004 Bullet and I can't seem to find a wrench that fits the oil plug very well and I don't want to strip it. I've tried 19mm, 3/4, and 7/16W. None of these seems to fit very well and I really don't want to strip it. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

When in doubt........use a bigger hammer or a crescent wrench!!

Topic: Old Fashioned Clear Glass Fuel Filter
Message: I just received the Old Fashioned Clear Glass Bowl Fuel Filter from the
Classic Motorworks web site. I'm having
trouble seeing how I'm going to mount the thing, the fuel inlet sticks straight up from the filter assembly, so I can't see how I can route the fuel line from the petcock to the filter, then from the filter to the carb on my 2004 500 ES.
Anyone have any experience in using this Old Fashioned Fuel Filter on
their Enfield, and if so how did you mount it and route the fuel lines?
Bruce
email: simmonsb@mtco.com
You cut some fuel line so that you can run a length from the petrol tap to the filter inlet. The trick is to use enough fuel line so that it doesn't kink. Then do the same from the filter outlet to the carburetor. Gravity will do the rest

Topic: Weak fire on plug
Message: I have a 1966 Royal Enfield that I picked up when working overseas.
It is 500cc and very clean and refurbished.
Here is the problem- I cranked it the other day and let it idle for 2-3 minutes and then cut it off. I went to crank it 3 hours later and Kicked and kicked and kicked some more and kicked again. Then decided to check to see if I was getting fire to the plug, I was but very weak, so I decided to put my battery on charge-I did that. I also poured a shot of gasoline down the plug hole. Then I started kicking again making sure that I was on the proper compresion stroke and all switches were on. Does anybody have a suggestion?
Should I look at the points?
Well look forward to some feedback, I need it cause I have a tired leg.
Regards,
Mr. Kick alot

Topic: Customizing the Sixty-5
Message: I have resisted buying a new Enfield 500 because of the lack of a 5-speed tranny. I like the new Sixty-5, but also want a retro cruiser look. Does anyone know if the single springer seat and pad will fit the new bike?
email: luoma1@cox.net
For the most part all of the accessories that are available for the conventional 4-speed Bullet fit the Bullet Sixty-5 including the solo seats

Topic: Diesel / Biodiesel
Message: Is there anyone out there that can import the diesel enfield's from Europe. I am hoping to buy and advocate diesel motorcycles as a way to use domestically grown biodiesel.
Also, even on the 500's gas, I occassionally need to go on the interstate, do people feel safe using ths bike on the interstate? Do people take 3 hour trips on the bike?
email: jim_poch@excite.com
The diesel bike has not been manufactured for several years. The Royal Enfield 500 will go 70-75 mph flat out. It is suitable for short freeway use, but it is not meant to be driven at those speeds for long periods of time. They are really happy between 55-60 mph. A three hour ride is only an appetizer for an Enfield

Topic: Bullett Electrical problems
Message: I have a new military model which blew several fuses and now seems to be without electric at all. Does anybody think this could be a short or a faulty component. I can tell when fuse goes when I am riding because amps drop and lights flutter then it starts to miss. I had it in to dealer when it first presented but now seems to be worse.
Any suggestions.
Thanks Dan
email: dkelley@pa.net
It sounds like some sort of "intermittent" short. These can be quite vexing to find. A couple of easy places to start are with the fuse holder itself, also check the right-hand switch gear near the front brake lever. Occasionally one of the screws that mount the controls just grazes a wire.

Topic: Anybody actually ride these things?
Message: Been thinking of getting a Bullet but can't get any real world impressions. All the used bikes I see have add-ons and accessories, but super low miles, which is starting to scare me. The only reviews I read sound like people who take a grandkid around the block in the 'burbs. Anybody push these in the mountains/curves? Pick-up, power curve, handling? Do people like to do more than talk to curious on-lookers? I had a Honda GB500 once- any comparison?

Topic: Valve train noise
Message: I have a 2001 500 Royal Enfield and have had it for a year. I love it, but the valve train noise is driving me up the wall. I am not new to sold lifters having owned an old panhead with them. I have ajusted the lifters and it runs fine. I just can't take the noise. Is there anythig other than the lead additives that can be done.

Topic: riding impressions/535 kit
Message: My dealer tells me that the 535 kit/sprocket change is a waste of time because it only gets another 5mph on top and puts too much pressure on the bottom end- any opinions out there? Also, would like general riding impressions from riders who may be using the Bullet for more than taking the grandkids for a putt in the 'Burbs. I'm not a racer, but I like good handling in the mountains. Opinions?
Thanks, Paul
email: paul@nyblock.com
The 535 kit does NOT cause any bottom end problems, in fact the factory made the 535 with the same bottom end
