Topic : Royal Enfield Family Reunions for 2005 |
| Message:
We are planning at least three Royal Enfield Family Reunions
this year:
- Reno, Nevada area (September 3-5, Labor Day weekend),
- Wisconsin (August 27)
- Missouri (July 22–24 - note the date change from
the past few years)
You owe it to yourself to head for one or more of these get-togethers.
They're top-notch events, and all who've attended have had a great
time! It's an outstanding way to show off your bike, meet other owners,
talk smart, and generally have a good time. We will have more
details and pictures next month

Topic: Sad loss of Royal and Rider
Message: Sad to say I'm reporting the loss of a Royal Endfield and its Rider last Saturday. Michael King, 56, of Owings,
MD was riding his RE on Rt 32 near Clarksville, MD when an oncoming teenager in a car crossed the center line and took
him out. He leaves behind a wife, and five children, the youngest is 17. Sorry, don't know much about his Royal, but
I figured someone here might know him. I will be happy to forward messages of condolence on to his widow. Mike was a good
guy, and also owned a Harley and a Triumph. He played blues guitar and was an accomplished woodworker. He will be greatly
missed.

Topic: Royal Enfield 12 or 6 volt?
Message: Hi, I am going to be renting a Royal Enfield in India later this year and am wondering if it might be 6v rather
than 12v, which could make it tricky for accessories I'm bringing. Does anyone know? Thanks!

Hey Kevin,
I just took my 2001 Bullet 500KS on a tour of the Great Plains. I started in
Austin, TX, traveled up the back roads through Comanche Lands and up north
through Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. By that time I was well
into what can be called Crazy Horse Country, which was my goal.
Every time I pulled into gas stations people would come over and ask about
the bike. It was great.
From the Little Bighorn battlefield I then road east to South Dakota,
spending the night in the Black Hills, from there turning south toward
Nebraska, Fort Robinson, where Crazy Horse was killed.
Then it was back down to Texas.
I kept a web log of the adventure, to be found at www.motorcycleblog.org --
just click on the poster of the Enfield girl, and it takes you to the blog.
I'd taken lots of spare parts for small repairs along the way. I had a flat
on the rear wheel outside a tiny town in Colorado called "Cope". What a
poignant name. The guy who ran the Sinclair station came and got me, we
hauled the bike back to his station and I put in a new tube there and was
underway the next day -- but I had ruined the tire and so stopped in another
town and had a fresh rear tire shipped overnight. Also replaced a broken
spoke.
Anyway I took lots of pictures and am writing a travel log about the whole
thing.
I had *NO* mechanical issues, just a few things that snapped along the way:
1) an aged fuel line / fuel filter broke -- 5 minutes to fix.
2) for some reason a front fender support strap broke at the brake up
3) my chain stretched radically in the incredible Great Plains headwinds
during the trip home
So, don't let anyone claim the Bullet can't take a long haul -- 3436 miles
in 11 days or so.
See pics at the website, which I will be updating gradually.

PS -- I have one of the few white Bullets imported to the US. I nicknamed
her "Powder" for the Powder River up in Wyoming / Montana, which is where I
took her.

Topic: Need torque values
Message: I just picked up a 1995 Bullet Deluxe 500. It has 1,950 kms on it. Not bad shape, seems to only need some TLC,
but the head seems to be expressing a bit of oil.
Can someone tell me what the torque values for the head bolts are? I need to tighten them correctly.
I have Snidal's service manual coming soon, but in the meantime I need to do a little work to get it ready for riding.
Any other advice, tips, suggestions for perking up an older Bullet will be appreciated.
Can you also please cc me at ichadwick@sympatico.ca?
Thanks
Ian

Topic: India to Europe
Message: Is there any way of getting from India to Europe? I understand it is illegal for a carnet to be issued for
a bike that leaves India. Can I buy a bike in India in say New Delhi and export it to Nepal and then register the bike
from where it would be legal to ride overland to Europe? Please help.

Topic: Importing to the US
Message: I've just been reading the various horror stories of people who bought a bike in India and then tried to import it into the US - sounds like it's just not feasible. Pitty - I'm currently in India and would dearly love to buy a Bullet 500, ride it around while I'm here, then have it shipped back to the US when I go home.
So I'm curious, has anyone tried to special order a US-spec bike through a dealer in India and, if that was possible, do you think then it would be feasible to import it?
