Get-Togethers to Mark on Your Calendar! |

this summer. We are planning two Royal Enfield
family reunions and we will be having an
open house/summer picnic here at headquarters
in Minnesota.
Here is our current list of events
in chronological order:
June 23-25 Royal Enfield Summer Picnic and
Open House We want to show off our new facility
and give us a chance to meet more of our
customers. The picnic will be held in our
home town of Faribault Minnesota and will
include tours, a great ride in the Mississppi
river country, technical information, contests,
food and great discounts on our parts and
accessories including free freight for anything
you decide that you can't live without.
The tentative schedule is: Arrive Friday
June 23, Ride, contests, tours, tech sessions
etc Saturday June 24, and home on Sunday
June 25. There is no fee for the event,
food on Friday and Saturday evenings will
be provided. Lots of lodging/camping is
available in the area. Give us a call at
800-201-7472 for more information. All bikes
and brands are welcome.
Reno Royal Enfield Family Reunion Held on
Labor Day weekend in Reno Nevada. Some unbelievably
beautiful rides in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area
are planned as well as food, fellowship
and fun. This has been a very popular event
in the past. Pre-registration is required.
Call Guy at: (775) 673-9611 to register
and for more information. You can see a
wonderful slideshowfrom last years reunions
here.

Note: Tait from our
office has gone to this event since its
inception and
has had so much fun that he has permanent
"dibs" on it.
The "Original"
Royal Enfield Family Reunion/RALLY ON THE
RIVER 2006 The Midwest Royal Enfield Family
Reunion will be held in September AGAIN
this year. Back by popular demand the rally
will be held the last weekend in September
(9-29, 30 & 10-1, 2006). The location
will be the same as always Green's Campground
and Canoe rental in Steelville, MO. We will
once again be joined by the Moto Guzzi National
Owners Club and the combined event is now
being called the RALLY ON THE RIVER 2006
to eliminate some of the confusion caused
by more than one event called the Family
Reunion. Here is a link to somepictures
of last years rally. More details to
follow and watch for info at www.interstatemotorcycles.com
email: bdunkus@fidnet.co.
Note: I have gone
to all of these events in Steelville and
it is well worth
the trip. The riding is beautiful and
Bill and Mary from Interstate and Skip
and his family from Greens are the consumate
hosts!

Topic: Carb adjustments
Message: My 500 bullett will
not run unless it has full choke.
The carb was totaly cleaned but it does
not want to idle any suggestions.
also where in canada can I get parts and is there
any dealers on Ontario
email: patrickh390@aol.com
Reply: Although
this sounds funny check to make sure that your
battery is up to snuff. A weak battery can give
you these symptoms which are like that of a
lean condition. If the battery is good the first
place to look is the hose between the carburetor
and the head. It is a wear item and cracks,
this causing a lean condition. Unfortunately
there is not a parts source in Canada. You can
call us toll free from Canada at 1-800-201-7472
or go to our webstore at www.royalenfieldusa.com

Topic: Head gasket
Message: Has anyone else had
any trouble with a little head gasket oil weapage?
If so, what did you do to remedy it? Also what
are the torque values of the head nuts that are
outside the rocker covers by the sparkplug and
cooore@mpression release valve.
email:
mmgrpress.com
Reply: The
torque value is about 22 ft lbs. Getting them
evenly torqued is more important than wether
or not they are 22, 23 or 24 ft. lb. They need
to be re torqued at around 500 miles and then
again around 1500, this should solve your problem.

Topic: My first motorcycle..
Message: Okay,so I've never rode
a bike, don't know how to drive one, change
gears, which brake to use when etc. But I really
want to. My question is do you
think a Bullet Classic would be a good bike to
start. I'm going to take a
safety course etc. But I don't plan on taking
this out on the highway right off
the bat. I have backroads I can drive on. I love
the look of these bikes but
being as the nearest dealer is 5 & 1/2 hours
away from me I'm concerned with it
breaking down or some problem happening and I
don't know what it is. I'm more
than willing to learn how to work on the bike
etc but I don't need a constant
problem. Any advice on these things would be great,
forrest.

Topic: New Chain FYI
Message: I noticed my chain was
starting to go on my '04 Bullet.
At first it looks like a 520 chain, but low and
behold it's a 530!
A "O" ring 530 cahin won't fit, (it's
too wide), so if-n your looking to
replace your chain go with a regular 530 chain,
(I drop on a D.I.D.).
I think it's like 100 pins or so, (I installed
it on the front sproket and
pushed the rear wheel in as far as it'd go then
keeping @ 1 1/2" play marked
and cut the chain).
One more thing to watch for make sure the master
link clip is facing INSIDE,
(toward the spokets), if not, it'll scrape against
the case, putting a nice
gouge in it!!!!!
Looking at the stock chain to the D.I.D., you
can see the stocker is a tad bit
narrower, smaller, looks more like a 520 chain.
Just thought a heads up on the chain and especially
the master link.

Topic: Zen and the art of motorcycle
Message: 30 years ago, I sold
my Suzuki T-500 to buy a couch, I'd just gotten
married. Late last spring I got a Honda VT1100
cheap and rode it 8,000 miles before I turned
it in on a new Electra. Although the Honda was
fast, reliable and comfortable, it lacked soul.
I don't want to attempt to describe a motorcycle's
soul here, but the Electra sure seems to have
it, even as a new bike. I've got to laugh when
I see all the concern about the Bullets being
able to keep up with freeway traffic. Tell me
what is so great about freeways anyway, gridlock?,
the quality of the food to be found? exceptional
lodging? majestic views? quality of the air? long
hours listening to the drivel that passes for
most radio these days? Here's an idea, remove
the concept "freeway" from your consciousness
and enjoy the Enfield for what it is. No worries
now, add a few comfort items and enjoy the essence
of raw motorcycling. Slower takes longer which
means more time in the saddle, hard f!
or me to see the downside of that.
I'll close with a question about oil leaks. Does
anyone have a Bullet that doesn't leak? I could,
I suppose accept the nature of my Electra as somewhat
leaky, it would be the zen-like approach, but
has anyone tried additives or come up with a novel
approach to the migration of oil out of the crankcase
to my garage floor.

Your Royal Enfield should not leak AT ALL. Take
is to your dealer and they can take care of
it.

Topic: ELECTRA UPDATE
Message:Well were nearly at 100
miles on the new electra fellow bulleteers and
heres the the report took it out sunday for a
30 mile run ran flawlessly except for my getting
use to the gears and clutch no worries i didnt
burn the clutch up or rip out the gears were still
in one piece anyway the electra is still in the
breakin process never took it over 50 mph varied
the speed and it cruized along just fine the only
bummer was after getting it home i did realize
i lost one of the timing chain cover bolts no
worries only mere dropplets of oil lost got a
tempory bolt from the local shop till the new
one arrives from enfield. And by the way if you
have not heard people telling you to lock-tite
nuts and bolt (do it please) it is true they will
rattle loose.anyway i think the elecra and me
are doing fine i think its starting to break in
its really coming into its own no real problems
other than the missing bolt oh yeah while at the
local shop waiting on my bolt a guy on a harley!
pulled up and parked next to my bike i watched
him through the window he must have staired at
the enfield for 5 minutes then got of his bike
and walked around it for another 5 minutes after
getting my .25 cent bolt and heading to the door
he asked me if it was mine and if was about a
1966 model i smile and in away it is but its new
he was puzzled at first till i showed him the
manufacture date on the front fork he had no idea
they were still made and commented he just may
have to have one.LOL well anyway ill keep you
all posted on the performance and such and thanks
again enfield for all you have done Aaron J. Long

Topic: Interstate suitability
Message: IMHO, the stock Bullet
is perfectly suited to 55-65 on secondary roads,
but not quite comfortable at highway speeds. However,
it doesn't take much to make it so, and CMW has
all the bits and pieces, surprisingly inexpensive.
The OEM exhaust and airbox are quite restrictive,
to accomodate emissions and noise certification.
Replace them with the K&N air filter and the
British-made exhaust system.
Rejet the stock Micarb, or, for a bit more power,
install the 34mm Mikuni. The "Bulletin"
dynoed this setup a few years back at 20 RWHP,
up from 16, a 25% increase.
You're not done! The bike is now more powerful,
but still turning 4500 RPM with the stock 17 tooth
countershaft sprocket. Replace it with the 18
tooth sprocket, and that drops to 4250. I would
(and have) install the hi-cap oil pumps as well,
for better oil flow and cooling.
I haven't seen the Electra, but it seems to have,
from stock, most of the desirable upgrades;
Hi-cap (gear) oil pumps
8.5:1 compression (up from 6.5)
Roller big-end bearing.
This motor would seem to need only a better
exhaust and air cleaner, together with re-jetting,
to carry the 19 tooth countershaft sprocket, for
70 MPH at 4025 RPM, which gives you a 75MPH+ passing
capability without twisting it too hard.
I have taken my bike a bit farther than this,
and it will approach 90, but the law of diminishing
cost effectiveness begins to apply. The first
five HP increase costs a lot less than the next
five. I can report that the Bullet is rock steady
at those speeds, no drama whatever.
Jim at CMW can fill you in on the details.
Best,
Dave Murray

Message: I recently purchased
a (barn find) in south-central Texas. The bike
was supposedly stored for at least 20 years and
the previous owner thought it was a 1954 Indian,
but he wasn't certain.
The identifying information on the bike is as
follows:
Raised (forged) numbers on the frame in front
of gas tank (RIGHT side): 4759
Stamped (recessed) numbers on the frame in front
of gas tank (Left side): 7749 M&B
Carbeurator cover states "Made in England"
An addition; I've never seen handle bars such
as this on any Indian or Royal Enfield.
Information I would like to know is the following:
1.) Who is the manufacturer of this bike ?
2.) What year was it made ?
3.) How can I tell the cc engine size ?
4.) Where is a good source for replacement-restoration
parts ?
5.) Any thoughts as to the value or collectibility
of this bike ?

Message: The Bullet I purchased
about 4 months ago is my first bike. I ride it
to work everyday. With that in mind, here's my
question: Is it "ok" to leave it in
the parking lot during a storm? I cover the bike
with the cover it came with but it doesn't seem
to be completely water proof. I did have trouble
with the electric start after a heavy downpour
and I was concerned that water could damage the
bike. Also, besides the obvious dangers of riding
in a storm, are there any mechanical considerations
I should take into account?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!
email: mikejb1979@hotmail.com
Reply: Using
the cover is about as good as you are going
to be able to do. Since the Bullet has points,
it is possible to have water get into the distributor
cap. When this happens you could have starting
trouble. The cure is simple, just use the screwdriver
in your tool kit to remove the two screws that
secure the distributor cap and wipe out any
moisture or spray some WD-40 inside to displace
any moisture. In India where bikes are seldom
garaged it is not uncommon to see a plastic
bag over the distributor secured with a rubber
band. An old trick we used to use on cars was
to spray the cap with cheap hairspray which
contains a lot of lacquer. The lacquer would
create a moisture barrier around the joint between
the cap and the distributor.
