Every day, many riders and enthusiasts from California contact us for information about purchasing a Royal Enfield motorcycle. Unfortunately, despite the strong demand from residents, new Royal Enfield motorcycles cannot currently be purchased in the Golden State.
Royal Enfield motorcycles sold in the United States have completed national certification for all EPA program requirements. However, like the products of other Small Volume Manufacturers (SVMs), Royal Enfield has not been able to to seek the separate and specific certifications required by the California Air Resource Board (CARB). In contrast to the EPA, the CARB does not currently have an SVM program in place.
There has been some recent discussion within the CARB about creating an SVM program similar or identical to that of the EPA. We hope that in the future the CARB will adopt such a program and allow Californians, like thousands of Enfield riders in the other 49 states, to enjoy the stunning vintage-inspired style and warranty-backed reliability of new Royal Enfield motorcycles.
Additional Information
There are many sources available for information and advocacy related to restrictive motorcycle regulatory and testing requirements as well as the impact of these policies on motorcycle riders and smaller manufacturers:
For further online reading, we also recommend the Motorcycle-USA article "Motorcycle Emissions Regs Examined" which explores the CARB, exemptions for small volume manufacturers and many other regulatory issues.
