So even if you use a 2x4 for rear wheel removal remember this techniqe for removing the rear shocks.  The top bolts are captive behind the fender struts.  This is an easy method for getting them out of the way.

Hell, I'm lazy ! I live on a dead end street ( no traffic ) so I just use the center stand on the curb of the sidewalk and let the rear wheel hang over the street. This gives me 5+ inches clearance.
Sorry, but that is just too easy a solution.

 ;)
