7" Lucas Headlight Conversion Kit
« on: July 21, 2011, 02:54:32 AM »
Just got the  kit in and I figured with my college education I should easily be able
to put it together in no time.  Boy did I feel dumb.  After an hour of failing I did a search
on this forum.  Thanks to Tanker and his post back in 2008 and a couple hours of
messing with those W clips I got it done.  Here is a link to his post:

http://www.enfieldmotorcycles.com/forum/index.php?topic=3210.0

I forgot to mention that there are no instructions whats so ever included with the kit.
Most important is that the W clip ends go into the front rim beveled edge with the
help of needle nose pliers.   So you first grab the front ring, insert headlight lens and then the W clips go in.  Then the inner ring goes in to a slot and gets screwed in with a screw and metal clip on opposite of the slot.  I also marked the places where the W clips touch the inner ring and went back and bent back the ridge on inner ring just a bit so there is enough room to connect the two rings.

Next step is to attach it to the bike.  It is way too hot right now in Chicago.  Almost hit 100 degrees today and it's humid.  It is still better than the winter we just had.

Is the conversion legal in your state/county?

I guess that could depend on whos book your reading.

According to DOT it probably isn't legal.  After all, they are the ones who insisted that we have a headlight that is fully adjustable and that requirement led to us ending up with the 5+ inch thing we get.

Whether your State laws require a fully adjustable headlight might be another matter entirely.  Some State laws don't get into that fine of detail and only require that a headlight be present if the vehicle is to be driven at night.

Now, while I can agree that a mis-aligned headlight that can blind oncoming cars at night shouldn't be allowed, several people have changed their headlights to these larger ones and oncoming traffic hasn't complained as long as the light is on low beam.

It is classified as 'Not DOT Approved', but in all of these threads I have never seen anyone mention having trouble with state inspection, etc.  I guess keep your old headlight assembly in a box just in case, but it will probably never see the light of day again.

Heh, even at lowbeam I've had cars move over when I come up from behind.  The 7" beam is a much safer way to ride.

The police officers in or around Chicago have more to worry about that my
7" headlight.  If you could see the things that happen in my neighborhood  you
would be amazed.  The younger generation has no respect for anyone else not even
themselves.  Chicago is a haven for illegal aliens.  One night during a thunder storm
they stole the copper downspouts from the building across the street.  Every time I walk outside my house I have to look out because anything can happen.

So I'm not really worried about my new headlight.  I have so many other
things to worry about.

My experience with cops and the vehicle code has shown me one thing. Cops don't know the law. I can tell you dozens of examples but the easiest solution for any mechanical issues is to simply tell them it is a 1955 design and therefore, "grandfathered" under the law.

One of my earliest memories was my dad getting a ticket for "headlights mounted too low" on his Austin Healey Sprite. Bugeye for Americans or Frogeye for Brits. A friend of mine had to talk his way out of a ticket for not using turn signals or seatbelts. In his 1932 Ford!
