Trip planning

Well, I'm going to start the diesel conversion this weekend. Hopefully everything will be ready for my planned trip to Seattle in July.

Here's my question: what recommendations do people have for books/maps/gazetteers for motorcycle road trips?

I used to work for Delorme Mapping in Freeport ME, so I'm very familiar with their Atlas and Gazetteers, which used to be the best source for back country roads; but those big maps are too big for strapping on a motorcycle tank!

I'm new to motorcycle touring, so I'm not familiar with what's out there.

Any great resources anyone have to recommend?

Have you considered a portable hand-held gps? Wouldn't take up much room at all.

my cell phone is a gps device. Pretty good, in fact. It's a Nokia n95.
But I don't trust gps devices... the data can be wrong, the battery can run down, the gps can break.

I'd rather have a good map as a backup...

I have yet to find a good motorcycle map.  Best to plan your route based on where your gonna stop and memorize the stuff in between.  However...along the lines of GPS Ive been thinking how cool it would be to have a HUD (heads up display) that would out line roads and tell you when to turn.  Much like a GPS, but it projects it out infront of you kinda like a 3-d map.  would be neat.  Other thought would be to mount a small GPS to your arm?

I thought Delorme made a "pocket edition" of their Atlas/Gazetteer books?  ???
