Import regulations

Hi guys. I was hoping to get some info. I have a 1993 RE Bullet in London UK that I would like to import into the US. I've most likely got to do some work to it to bring it up the spec for US EPA standards. Does anybody have any information or has anybody gone through this process before? What needs doing (catalytic converter etc), paperwork, costs etc...

I think it depends on the state you bring it to.   It may be old enough to be exempt from a lot of the BS laws except for California,  there they require a DNA test and tracking device implanted...

Just donate the bike to me. I'll look after her really well and can just cut your losses.

Not worth the headache, hassle or money. You can easily buy a used RE under $3000.00 .

I agree with GreenRE.
There are EPA (Environmental Protection Act) requirements, DOT (Department of Transportation) rules and other requirements that make bringing a vehicle into the USA a pain.

Even if it is being imported on a temporary basis for touring there is a bunch of crap to put up with.

20 years may not be old enough to skirt the regs. If the bike doesn't have some special significance, like a Vincent engine, see LWT's post above.

You need to find out the regulations and paperwork needed for the state you are planning to move to. I wouldn't think you would have a problem considering you are coming from England which has tough standards/regulations.
