The thump of the iron barrel has more to do with the valve timing and other aspects. The uce barrel is aluminum with an iron sleeve which is still retro enough tech (think bsa goldstar for example). The hydraulic valve lifters live in the crankcase so if you need technology that's older than the 1950's hydraulic valves finding a used iron barrel would be less trouble than modifying a uce in my opinion.
