New 2006 Bullet Owner

Happy New Year to All !! I am a brand new rider and purchased my used bike in October.  I look forward to asking many questions and getting the experts answers.  My speedometer is off by about 15 miles per hour.  Do I need to replace this item or is it fixable?

Your speedometer may be a little worse than most, but they almost all read the wrong speeds, and it sometimes even varies from winter to summer as to how bad it might be.

The solutions might be to get a bicycle speedometer and install the sensor on the front fork, or get an expensive GPS speedometer(if you can find one that fits in the hole in the dash), or get a tachometer and learn how to relate that to your speed.

None of us really can depend on our speedometers with Bullets.

Ace's suggestions are good ones. I've noticed that mine is consistently 10% optimistic (according to what the roadside radar signs tell me). So if my speedo says 50mph, I'm really doing 45mph. 30mph indicated is 27mph actual, etc.

Hi UG: My 06 is probably off too (not by 15 mph) . Doesn't bother me enough to care.  60 feels fast enough on it anyway . Then their's less of a chance of getting a speeding ticket..It probably needs a bit of cable lube. Cheap n easy to see if that helps ya..GM

What they said. The advantage of using a bicycle type multifunction speedo is that you get a resetable tripmeter. I would get the most simple one you can. I have a calorie counter on mine, and i still can't lose any weight!

I concur with ACE and would run a bicycle computer. I have a heavy duty Cat Eye computer on my Bultaco Campera and its been on there for about 7 years and 6 thousand miles with no problems. I especially like the top speed and average  speed it records and of course the trip meter.

I was wondering how fast (or slow ) I was actually going on the first couple of rides on my recently purchased 2001 Bullet, as I have been on mostly deserted backroads by myself out in the country. But today I hooked up with my brother and his girlfriend on their Harleys for a little ride (with a bit of traffic) and it seems my speedo is off by about 5mph. So it turns out I've been hovering around an indicated 55-60mph for most of the time and that works out to a true 50-55mph, and this seems perfect to me, the bike just thumps along nicely.....the few roads with traffic I thought I was really going slow. Turns out everyone else is just hauling butt

That sounds about right to me. That seems to be the average speedo error.
