Help With 700cc Twin Rev Counter Box
« on: April 22, 2013, 03:29:12 PM »
Alright, waiting on parts and getting ready to wrap up my Trailblazer restoration.  Just yesterday I FINALLY figured out how the tach works on this bike.  I knew that the little block off plate on my timing cover was the access hole for the tach cable, but I don't have access to a RE/Indian parts catalog and NONE of the the RE 700's had a tach.  Then yesterday while browsing Hitchcock's, I came across a used Interceptor gauge cluster, and the gauges themselves were identical to mine on the Trailblazer.  So I went to the parts look up for the '67 Interceptor and there it was, the rev counter gear box.

Does anyone know anyone who has one of these they are willing to part with?
It would of great help to me and you would have my deepest appreciations.  Thanks!

Hi Scottie, You have to be sure which Tach you have to match the correct cable and gearbox. Some of the tachs are 2:1 and others are 4:1.  ERC

Everything else in the timing set up is 2:1 so I can't imagine why the tach wouldn't be as well.

What makes you think it's 2:1.  ERC

Well, the magneto is 2:1 anyways.

The tachs were optional on all but the Apache models in the Indian Twin line (they didn't fit well with that big Stewart Warner speedo). They used the Smiths RC184 tachometer (4:1) with the Smiths 90 degree drive P/N BG1506/01. It drives off the front camshaft so it turns 1/2 the crankshaft speed making it a 2:1 drive that is used with the 4:1 tach. If you want to find the tacho info in the old Royal Enfield parts books, you have to look right after the front fork entries since they were considered a part of the front end I guess. Hitchcock's has them listed for 103 BP so they can get expensive. Finding an old RC184 can really get expensive. I've got one but I'm saving it for my Apache project.

I have a '58 Trailblazer.  I already have the tach, my casquette has both the speedometer and tach mounted side  by side.  Would that be the same tach you are referring to?

If the tach has a gray face on it then it will work with what Rotor says for the drive. Just make sure you pull the small inspection plate off and check to see if the bolt on the cam has a big notch on it. If it is a regular hex on the bolt you will have to pull the timing cover and install the drive bolt for the tach.  ERC

ERC - Yep, that's the 1.  I can't imagine it not having the the drive bolt either, being that the tach had to have been hooked up originally from the factory, so I should be good to go.  Hopefully I can find a used 1 because this restoration has me broke!  No regrets though, only anticipation to ride.

And speaking of anticipation.....
My Thorspark electronic ignition should be here any day!!!

The gray face speedo & tach were later magnetic cup types but they did use a 2:1 ratio drive. That's what My 63 Interceptor has but it is a P/N BG1508/01. I think the outer cable fixing is a little different if I remember correctly. Hitch likely has those too. Most folks that put them on flea pay don't know which one they have but people buy them anyway.
