1967 Royal Enfield with 567km. Starting Issue
« on: June 23, 2014, 02:48:43 AM »
I need some help. I took my bike to an authorized dealer last summer. They had it for 3 months. They went through it and replaced some leaky seals and gave it a tune up. All was well.

It was stored thru the winter. Got it out in the Spring. Started on the 3rd kick. Ran great. Brought it back home. It sat for about an hour or so. It would not restart.

Left it in the garage for a couple of weeks. Got it out again and tried to start. Kicked and kicked and kicked. Wouldn't start. And yes, gas was on, kill switch was on and the key was on. Put it away.

The following weekend I tried again. After about 6 tries, it started. Ran the bike over an hour. It stalled once but restarted. Brought the bike home. It sat about 4 hours and wanted to ride again. It wouldn't start. UGH... Put it in garage.

I got it out today, it never started. I kicked and kicked and kicked. Spark plug looks fine. I use the decompression switch while trying to start. Usually one kick with the switch depressed then one without. I have no idea what else to do?

When dealer went through it, everything was great. There has to be something I am missing.

Any help would be appreciated.

I assume this bike has been "imported from India"?   ???  It appears to be a classic Iron Barrel model produced in the '90's.  The simplest way to figure it is this.....  Is your transmission a 5 speed or a 4 speed?  If it is truly a a '67 then it would have a 4 speed transmission and originally would have been a 350cc model.  Do you have any info at all of this bike?  Better yet, how many digits are in the vin#?

Just for reference, this bike here is a 1995 model 500cc Classic Iron barrel.  It looks identical to yours.

Yes, I agree that this appears to be a more recent model Bullet that was sold with old paperwork to avoid importation restrictions.

Be that as it may, the starting practices are the same.
Put on the choke lever.
Use the kicker to bring the engine to where you feel compression build up, and then use the decompressor lever to relieve compression, and SLOWLY push the kickstart lever until reaching TDC, or when you just stop hearing the engine exhaling, and then kick it once fully thru, as a priming stroke.
Then repeat the procedure with the key on, and it might start.
If not, continue to repeat the procedure.  After a few tries, if it doesn't start, take out the spark plug and clean/dry it, and try some more.

Usually, it will start in 1 or 2 kicks using this procedure.

Check the compression, spark and condition of fuel "no water" etc. If you have all three it should start.  ERC

Get a can of starr ya bastard!
(Real thing we have here, works good)

OT: I find that priming the carby and holding thd decomp and kicking the piston around a few times helps get some mixture flowing around. Then do as ace says, TDC and kick her in the guts!

His bike likely still has a CV carb which doesn't have a tickler.  That's a feature exclusive to Amal carbs.

Still, kicking the engine around a few times helps.

It's a Mikarb, which is a sort of clone of a Mikuni VM round slide 28mm.
This is a throttle slide carb. Not CV.

That's right, the AVL has the CV carb.  My bad.    :-X

Maybe that last zero in the price was a misprint?

If that bike sells for even anything close to $20K, I'm taking the Blackhawk to Ohio to sell it.    ::)

Have you put any fresh gas in it? I'd drain the tank and carb and put in some fresh gas. See how much water, if any, comes out with the old stuff. Also take off the points cover and check for corrosion. How's the battery?
A bike sitting around for three months with no prep can lead to bad things.

Bein's that the picture he posted in the forum and the one on Craig's list are the same. it's a pretty good bet it's the same bike. And the way the ad is written, sounds like the price is not a typo.  I wouldn't want to say anything about misrepresentation.

I have just back on this forum, I have a 1972  Enfield India 350 with a micarb on it.   The starting procedure I use is turn on petrol. pull choke on. Pull decompressor lever in kick it over a few times to suck some petrol in then turn on ignition.  Turn the motor over with decompressor until the amp meter just goes back into negative then raise kickstarter and give it a good kick it should start first go.
