more questions/opinions
« on: August 31, 2008, 02:10:29 PM »
I placed an order, and need to order a few more things.
1. Exhaust. I decided on a British system. What is your opinion of the 50's style vs. the Gold Star?
2. I decided not to get a sidestand.
3. Free flow air intake: Cone or oancake, and how do you attach it so it doesn't vibrate off?

Opinions eh?
OK here's mine.

Exhaust, 50s style because it sounds good and looks like it belongs on there.
The goldstar one looks good on a goldstar and sounds a bit like a megaphone. Kinda tinny and too loud for me.

Sidestand, whatever if it's what you want.

Air filter, I like the K&N in the original air box. More than enough air flow and does not sound so sucky as the clamp on ones. If you run a clamp on one find a way to secure it to the frame somehow or you'll be vibrating your carb off sometime.

Exhaust selection will also affect the styling cues.
The Goldstar system has a swept back pipe and tapered megaphone muffler that tends to give a more rakish and sporty look.
The 50s exhaust gives a very traditional appearance.
It depends on the look that you're after, as well as the sound and performance.

The K&N recommendations say that the pancake style flows better than the cone type, because their studies show that most of the air enters at the area nearest the carburetor.
So, while I have the cone type on mine, it's reasonable to expect that the pancake should do better, if the K&N recommendations mean anything.

Mine hasn't had any tendency to vibrate off, so i don't have any recommendations for that yet.
