Throttle Tube

I don't even know how this happened, but my throttle started working backwards and I discovered the tube had rotated farther past the idle point, apparently beyond a detent of some kind. I "fixed" it, but it would require very little effort to push it beyond that point again and "over close" the throttle. The dealer sent me a new tube, but it won't fit. It won't go far enough on the handlebar to allow the collar's alignment pin to fit the hole drilled in the handlebar. Are there different throttle tubes for different models, or should I cut the end out of the tube so it will slide on farther? Only needs another 1/4" or so, but it just won't make it. This is an '05 Bullet. -Thanks.
