centrifugal advance bassackwards?

When I purchased my 99 500 Bullet, the advance mech was frozen. I dissembled the unit, and cleaned it up.  The points cam can go straight up, or be 180 out. is there an index, or a diagram as to which way ???
there was a memo I read somewhere that the advance would double if incorrect.
