May I have a 250 watt
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:14:36 PM »
May we have a 250 watt alternator please and thank you.

Some would like to charge cell phones and power GPS's and communication sets and such.
Me, I would like to ride lit up light like Las Vegas Christmass Tree in the name of safety.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, you don't need a bigger alternator.

I'm producing 3200 lumen on my HID headlamp (about 4 times as bright as halogen) using only 35 watts.

I have bar end blinkers as well as front blinkers, my taillight is twice as bright as stock, as are my rear turn signals, and I have an extra lightbar mounted as well.

All using about 1/10 the normal draw... 100 % LEDs.

Yeah, those LEDs are the business. I have all my minor lights running them (including some home made LED instrument illumination) and the ammeter doesn't register any detectable draw until I switch on the main halogen headlamp.

Thanks Fellas, L.E.D.'s for the instrument lamps are in my lighting plan but the rest of it calls for higher efficacy incandescent bulbs and more of them.  ;)

Ice, when shopping for a high output alternator the total wattage isn't as important as the watts it develops at an idle or at a lower RPM when puttin' around town.

Data is hard to nail down on these alternators. I think stock may be around 100-110 watts peak.
High out put models might be as much as 180 watts peak.

A 180 watt will be right on the ragged edge at times. A 250 watt will do what I want with a decent margin.

Ice, here is  a link to some data for the Sparx high-output alternator: www.british-motorcycle-parts.co.uk/Test_Results.htm . I hope this helps a bit.
