I saw him play one of his Monday night gigs at Iridium back when he was a mere 87 years old. Fabulous show! H e may not have had the dazzling speed of his younger days anymore, but he had lost none of lyrical qualities or the swing. He was also charming and very nice to talk to. Sad to see him go, but I guess you can't complain with making it to 94 and playing right up to the end.Eamon
Caught one of those Iridium gigs also about eight years ago. I went to high school with Paul Nowinski, then the bass player in his trio. So I got to shake the hand of the master. He was very gracious. A true giant.
