i could be wrong as I am no expert in Indian market bikes, but I would suspect that a true 79 would have the key on the outside of the right hand tool box. If this is a bike that is in the US it may be a newer bike with bogus papers. In that case it is possible that a more modern wiring harness would work. We carry them (1-800-201-7472) but it will a bit of a gamble. All of the bikes sold in the US have had the key next to the speedo. The main differences are minor for earlier harnesses. What you may find is that some of the connectors changed from year to year and a few other small things like ground wires for the pilot lights. For example a UK or Indian market harness for an earlier Bullet may not have a wire for the neutral light

FWIW My domestic market '79 has ignition switch in tool box.
Not that it works with a specific key, anything will do.

I'm pleased to know your RE has a key.
I fully expected it to have a large toggle switch sticking out for easy access.
You chuckle at the idea but my '67 Triumph Spitfire had such a switch.
Will, really, it had 5 double throw toggle switches located side by side.
They had to be in the correct position for the ignition to be on.
As I recall it was 1 up, 2,3 down, 4 up and 5 down. (The previous owner was a bit on the weird side.)

I'm toying with the idea of doing away with it as anything will turn it. Lolly stick, screw driver, coin. I can't leave a key in as it would fall out whilst riding.
I saw a guy recently who had replaced it with a toggle switch. The multi position switch would be ideal.
