Hey, I usually always run my petcock in the "normal" (down) position, and almost never run it in the "reserve" (up) position.  I ran out of fuel the other day while it was in the "run" position.  I have the petcock with the clear plastic filter bowl on the bottom.

It looks like this:

____________RES______________

OFF_____________________Blank

____________ON_______________

"Off" has the arm pointed to the left, "ON" has it pointed down (where I usually put it), and "RES" has the arm pointed up (where I run it for 20 miles or so after a fillup).  The arm does not swivel over to point to the blank spot.

My petcock looks like the one in the following link, except for the steel bowl shown is replaced by my clear plastic one:

In fact, the face of it is the same as well

Garbone is right.

Not a good price for a used part though. Check this;

And can be accessed from the page your viewing.  Shocked

I found my stock petcock had the tubes that go to "run" and "reserve" reversed... in other words, when it ran out (in the "run" position) it was empty... just had to line up the top strainer/tube thing to make is work correctly (I think)  Wink

I have fooled around with my petcock in the past (that doesn't sound quite right) completely taking it apart for cleaning and just general knowledge of how it operates. When putting it back together I flipped the inner disc accidentally and found it worked opposite of the normal function so I took it apart and took just a little more time to actually see how that disc rotates and functions. You might give it a try to see if it is assembled correctly.

I recently bought one of the locking petcock's from CMW and have found that it works much better than the stock one and also gives another layer of security for my Bullet, and I consider it a bargain for about $15.

What the fuck.  No I'm saying the fuel ran out when it was in the run position, which it's not supposed to do.  It also runs out in the reserve position, so I think mine's broken.  I'm not just randomly explaining how it works!

Dude,  read that damn thing 3 times and for the life of me could not figure out why you posted....

The plastic at the base of the chimney on my original petcock came from the factory broken.  I would run out of gas on run and have no reserve, would have to lean the bike onto the left side to get some fuel from the other side of the hump to make it to the gas station.   Had to replace the petcock.  Luckily it was under warranty at the time.

  My stock one had the clear filter basket and my new one does not... no big deal..

Comes out while "on" and comes out when on "reserve".  So- as long as the gas doesn't come out on "off", I don't get the problem.
