leaking black ?grease?
« on: January 10, 2010, 02:03:20 AM »

G5 200 kms. Bottom right side of engine behind the kickstart/rear brake lever is a round plate with allen bolts. I have this black oily/grease coming out of the bottom edge of this plate. It's not engine oil. Transmission? The bolts on the plate I can get to seem tight. Dealer doesn't seem too concerned, anyone else have this happen ? Larry

Chain oil?
CJ

I feel a bit of a clot if it is chain grease but there seems an awful lot of it and it seems to be eminating from the bottom of that round plate then weeps over the fins. I wipe it away daily to avoid splats on the garage floor. What's behind that plate ? Tks

Shouldn't be anything to worry about, that is the kick shaft cover. The kick return spring is located behind the cover. That would be the grease they use to lubricate the kick spring.

Thanks motocamp, you've eased my mind.

I had the same question on C5. looked like a leak from a plate back a bit from the rh footrest but seemed sticky- not like engine oil. Spoke to dealer and he looked at demo bike and was same- his mechanic said was chain grease. I wiped it off at 150km and now aT 635 nothing new.I checked out the demo bike last week at 500 service and had build up of grease`looking material.

All of the ones that I have seen, both G5 and C5 have had a little of this chain grease on them.  If one would want, you could clean the chain and apply a lube that is less likely to sling off.

Definately chain lube, had the same problem, changed the lube brand, problem stopped.

Cheers  :)

When I read the post I was all envious.
Why doesn't my bike leak. And this guy has a leak.

You dont get the bullet trip till your bikes leaking oil.
And mine refuses to leak.

I keep praying for a small stain. But nothing.

It makes me feel incomplete.
A bullet without an oil leak.  ;D What kind of bullet is that.

But like the guys have already said that's from your chain.
Buy a can of motul chain cleaner and Motul Lube.
It will go away.
Or just wash it out once with some petrol / cleaner and it wont come back unless you grease up the chain again.

Ps: One idea I have is to just pour some oil around the area I park my bike. Get some good stains going.
That way I wont feel so deprived when showing my bike to the mates.

Just strip the thread on the sump plug, or else just loosen it, works for me !!!
