G5 Completes 5000 miles !!!
« on: March 22, 2010, 01:48:42 AM »
My black stallion, G5, has ran 5000 miles since I bought it about one year ago - 2 weeks shy of one year. I stopped at that moment and took some pictures of odometer and the surroundings. I was at a horse farm by the river in NJ.  ;D

I'm proud for you, it was a fun 5000 wasn't it.
On the eighth day God created the C5, and it was better looking than anything on the planet.

Yes ! It has been great fun.  As you have noticed, the bike gets better with mileage.  I must say that I do take extra care of it and I enjoy that too !  And the bike responds !

I could not agree more with you, Singhg5!
Give them the extra care and they'll give you back the extra miles.
The bikes seem to mature around 3K. They run smoother, faster and the fun factor just keeps increasing.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
It is good to ride

Br. singhg5,

Now that fussing and sorting is no longer required, what do you UCE guys do with all the extra time you have on your hands ?  ;D

Thanks.  Good to hear from you after some days.  Your valuable suggestions and technical expertise is very helpful.  I did adjust my Idle the way you had told (by turning the brass large screw) and I am so much happier with it.

I could not agree more with you, Singhg5!

Br. Ice:

Uh ! I keep looking at the under belly of the bike, by kneeling on the ground and sticking my face close to the center stand looking up towards the oil drain plug, but ... ???. NO LEAKS.  Only my pants get dirty by kneeling on the ground so now I got to wash them !

On the topic of caring for RE G5, I have discussed all of them in detail in the forum throughout the one year period.  In brief, I have done the following -

Parts Added -
1. Padded Back Rest.
2. Windshield.
3. Diamond Engine Bar.
4. A small video camera case - attached to back rest - for small items.

Maintenance -
1. Changed spark plug once.
2. Changed battery to Yuasa maintenance free.
3. Adjusted the chain once.
4. Tyre pressure 18-20 psi front and 24 psi rear.
5. Washed frequently with S100 Total Cycle Cleaner and polished with Original Spray Cleaner and Polish.
6. Lubed cables and hinges with WD40 or/and Maxima Chain / Cable Lube after each wash or as needed.
7. Lubed chain with Maxima Chain Wax or heavy oil 85 after each wash.
8. Changed both pilot bulbs.
9. Added Star Tron Fuel Treatment (blue) to gas tank with each fill in winter months.
10. Adjusted idle speed once.
11. Adjusted clutch cable as needed.
12. Tightened all nuts / bolts / screws after first 3 months and then every 6 months.

Alterations -
1. Disconnected side stand engine-off cable permanently.

Oil and oil filter Change and Screen Cleaning -
I have purposely separated it from the Maintenance because of the history of my bike.  This was one of the first units to arrive in US and its transmission parts did not have enough clearance.  During the first few months, we were riding slowly to break the engine. We heard grinding noises from transmission and metallic particles were coming off into the oil and collecting on drain plug and screen.  I did 4 oil changes in the first 1000 miles. I had used Yamalube motorcycle semi-synthetic 20w-50 oil.

Then these bikes were recalled by RE manufacturer and transmission was rebuilt with correct parts. Still  there was larger than expected amounts of 'stuff' - combination of metal parts and excess sealant was dripping down in the transmission/engine that needed to be cleared and removed.  Frequent oil change was the way to keep engine clean and safe.  By then I had shifted to Motul semi-synthetic 15w-50 oil, except once when I used fully synthetic oil.

In total, 6 oil changes, filter changes, and screen cleanings in 5000 miles !  Since these early manufacturing problems of transmission have been fixed, you won't need so many oil changes.  You may choose to follow the manufacturer's manual guidelines or your own intuition, or follow the recommendations of knowledgeable rider you trust.

In the end RE tells you what it wants, just listen and look for what it is saying ! And Keep on  ;D

Zooming in at the pictures I noticed there is a wire hanging loose (just below the saddle)?

Very nice back rest. Where did you get it?
Does anyone know if this one also fits an iron Electra5S?
