This is a SURVEY of RE performance.  It is just to get an idea of HOW FAST (I mean SLOW  ;D) the TURTLEs take off from absolute standstill.  Here is what I want to know - Model, Year, any engine modifications, how many seconds does it take to reach 50 mph from 0 mph (standstill) ?

I had a watch on my handle bar.  I was stopped at a traffic light and when it turned green, I looked at the seconds on the watch and then sort of raced it for about 20 seconds and glanced at  the speedometer.  This is my THOROUGHLY UNSCIENTIFIC just for fun kind of result -

MODEL / YEAR :           EFI, G5 / 2009

Engine Modification :     None

0 - 10 Seconds :          40 mph on speedometer

0 - 15 Seconds :          50 mph

0 - 20 Seconds :          60 mph

What do you get on your bike ?

I canít give you any timings Singh only a general impression of gunning it from the lights. Iíve only done it all through the gears when trying to beat a car from two lanes narrowing into one from a standing start.

Firstly it just didnít feel right but to the bikes credit it sort of said ďif you want that then Iím up for itĒ and off we went. It certainly defended its honour and reminded me that we shouldnít be doing stuff like that by surging forward every time I changed gear as the revs dropped right into the maximum torque range.

The acceleration feels descent off the line, could be better though! Upper end acceleration is where it needs the most improvement.

I measure my acceleration in minutes not seconds ;D

Interesting article.  Liked it.

The top speed 79 mph, I have seen on my RE.
But can't say the same for 10 second 0-60 mph. Either I or my RE is slow at acceleration. Have you or anyone else tried that ?

Timed on a video with time-bar in seconds, on several acceleration runs to 70mph.
Not real accurate, but ballpark.
Chumma's bike.

Model/Year.......Iron Bullet Military 2006
Engine Mod.......Ace Fireball 535
Gearing.............19 tooth sprocket
0-70mph........... Around 7-7.5 seconds
Top speed.........101mph on gps, unfaired military with panniers and Lycette pillion seat, rider tucked.

So Chris-G5 gets descent acceleration off the line? If pointing the right way on a hill that's understandable, but it would be ascent acceleration facing the other way! That could be indecently slow!

Going up a hill and into head winds are definitely limiting factors!  :D Even though these bikes are called Bullets, they are not designed for speed, but they are still fun and stylish bikes.  ;D

I have never tried to time a 0-60 run. I have had my G5 close to 90 MPH, going down a hill and tucked behind the windshield.  ;D

Ace:

I have seen Chumma's bike.  It is really very impressive and its performance is unbeatable !

I want to get some idea on the performance of Iron barrel vs AVL vs EFI, even if it is ball park estimates.  Just curious to see if EFI improves acceleration !   I hope owners of AVL or iron barrel REs give some numbers.  Even results from more EFI bikes will be a good indicator of variability amongst each other.

I think I can get to 50 in less than 10 seconds, but who knows as I understand that the stock speedometer is often off by up to 8 mph.  This level of error seems about right based on the speed trap in my neighborhood.

My speedometer reads the same as my brother's HD Electra Glide which has an electronic speedometer. I guess it could be off too. :D

Sing, you've got me going. Just like a kid again, now I'm into dragging my Enfield.
I went up one on my main jet cause after yesterday it looked a little whitish. But the results are better. I wouldn't have thought it because it sure felt better running lean, however, here is the new readings:
0 -50 mph 7.8 sec
0 -60 mph 12.5

Or maybe I'm just getting into the swing of dragging.  8)

I too find that when I'm following a row of cars in a 40 limit my speedo reads 40, ditto 50 in a 50 limit. Which only proves my speedo is no more inaccurate than anyone else's but my instinct is it's fairly accurate.

As for acceleration I have no figures but it is clear from owners club rideouts that the EFI picks up a fair bit faster.

I'm pretty sure my speedo is accurate too, for the same reasons as Clubman above, and from tailing a friend's new VW Golf at sixty for a couple of miles.
Don't know the acceleration times, got no way to tell, but plenty of very satisfying torque.
The sensation of speed is subjective, and opening the bike up after being stuck in an unpassable queue for a spell is a glorious thing. The bike suits this old bloke just fine. Japanese missiles scream past me, but they're not having what I'm having.....

Will:

It is easy - Tie your wrist watch (that displays seconds) on the handle bar !  Then go for the throttle from stand still to 50 mph !  And look at the seconds from the corner of your eye !

I know that you just enjoy the thump and the ride as is.  BUT knowing a number (seconds to mph) will NOT change anything.  You will still love it -  as I do  ;D

Well, yes, I know HOW   ::)  -  I just don't own a wristwatch!  Never quite saw the point of em. There are clocks everywhere if I want to know the time, but I hardly ever do.
If I had one I'd very likely do the acceleration timing thing just out of curiousity, and I will if can borrow one. I can tell you the bike is pretty nippy off the start line when I've jumped the queue at traffic lights and then have to justify my actions.......
But I am aware it is a thumper not a sports bike, especially later on the open road when they all go cruising past me again  :-\
