My problem with the snails was that I had to pull the right one clear out past the post that it indexes, to turn it. That meant I had to really loosen up the nuts or remove them from the axle. Everything at that point was kinda flopping around. I don't what it was about that snail, but I did the best thing I could. get rid of the damn thing. On most bikes I've had I liked the snail. This one was by far the worst!
On the other hand, most of the bikes I had had the snail on the swing arm pivot and that works out much better than having to loosen the axle and brake and all the rest of the crap. The chain and wheel stayed aligned. It was a far better system.

I get that sometimes.  I put the left one back a notch or two to get some room, then push the front of the tire to the right to leverage the axle back on the right, set the right snail and let it drop into place, then set the left and bolt it all down.  If you get enough room on the left it's easy to get enough room on the right to turn it to where you want it and drop it back in place.

Based on my picture book ("Royal Enfield- By Miles The Best") those snail adjusters were first used by RE with the introduction of the pivoted trailing arm system in 1948.
After 65 years, their still with us.

I adjust my chain with the wheel off so I'm only dealing with the right snail. After tightening up the two big brake plate bolts I put the wheel in and all I have to deal with is the left snail when tightening the axle.

Are those nut adjusters for adjusting the wheel or for adjusting just how far the owner can push the limits before loosing it? :)

There's no adjustment for the nut on top of the seat, that's why we congregate here.

Today I de-installed this coffee cup holder from my handlebars

http://www.ridepdw.com/goods/cargo/bar-ista%E2%84%A2

and installed this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050TCLOO/

The first one sat too low (so the bottom of the cup hit the gas tank on tight turns) and didn't hold the cup tightly enough. The second one is perfect.
