I have been looking at the Smiths replacement speedo for my 2008 bullet but noticed it works backwards was this ever typical of a smiths speedo? My 79 Bonnie has smiths instruments that work normal ( left to right)

It's NOT backwards - it's just upside down! The needle sweeps in the same direction - just from the TOP, not the bottom like we're used to ......

I added one to my '99..really adds if you are going for the "retro" look..but are hard to see at night and if you have lots of miles on the bike.. the new speedo throws everything off.

Is it simple plug and play, in the sense it goes with the stock speedo cable, or is a different cable required .

tiz a strieght foward swop on most models , using the std speedo cable

HOWEVER , the ones supplied in the UK do not have provision for indicator lamps , IE there are no lights for main beam/neutral or indicators ,

assess the differences before ordering

 I wonder if it is possible to mod and re mount a later style smiths unit into the standard RE speedometer housing.

I purchased the Smiths repro speedometer and was disappointed with the lighting, it is very dim.  I solved this problem by disassembling the unit and installing a side-firing LED strip in the lower case.  The sifference in lighting is stunning and very bright.

Does the top-needle Smiths speedo plug directly into the current US-spec C5 harness & cable (e.g. my '12 C5 Special)?  I would like to switch over for the period-correct look, but only if it works without too much hookey-booing around in there...

I can't speak to the C5 as I have a legacy bullet.  It was a direct drop in for mine though.

i put one in my '012 c5 and wasn't too impressed. appeared to be a bit slow on the needle take off to 30 mph.
up to 50 mph it was as accurate as my original speedo - lol -but after riding the bike about 6 or so miles it only displayed 1.1 on the odometer.
