US Headlight switch jumper
« on: February 13, 2011, 02:40:00 PM »
I recently saw a mention of US-spec. bikes having a jumper to short out headlight switch resulting in always-on condition.  Where is it?  With it, the off-park-headlight switch is no functional.  I have sidecar on '09 G5 and am interested in mounting a small driving lamp on right side of sidecar.  I would like to power it off this non-functional headlight switch.  The RE wiring diagram would be more useful if it grouped items and connections by location.    Dwight     GA-DK

If you remove your headlight and follow the wires from the switch, you should find about a 5" jumper with connection blocks on both ends. Just remove the jumper, reconnect the blocks, and you have an active switch.

Of course that would be a blatant violation of Local, State and Federal Law .......  ::) On top of that - it'd be un-legal .......  ;)

I know it's illegal to manufacture a bike like that, is it illegal to make the modification?

I was reluctant to do it since I thought I'd leave them turned off by mistake some time.  It hasn't been a problem and having the extra juice to start the bike with the headlight turned off if it's reluctant is nice security.

That "leaving them off by mistake" would be the very thing that would get you toasted in some locations ...... I have the "rest of the free world" headlight in both of mine and drive happily about withe the "day beam" on ...... I haven't had any flack from that. The law says "ON" - it doesn't say how bright ..... That's MY story and I'm stickin' too it - until I get a ticket.

Yeah, now that I have the 7" headlight I've got that little parking bulb that comes on at the first notch on the switch.

My '89 H-D still had the "lights" position on the switch with a jumper. When you ride a bike that looks like it is over 50 years old, no cop will stop you for it. A new (21st century) design might be questioned.

Now THERE'S a man who's had a Brit bike or two in the day ...... Hahaha! Been there, done that! I often used the weak beam as an excuse to stay over at a lovely tarts house if the notion struck me ....  ::)
